Closest competitor for the SVS SBS-01???

670 Views 6 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  Ron Temple
Ok, as I have mentioned a few times in many threads :D, I have placed an order for the SBS-01 5.1 System.

Now, I am starting to wonder. I have, of course, NEVER listened to any SVS product before. What if I end up not liking it (gulp), or to put it another way - it doesnt work quite within the parameters of my room (which is just my family room, not a fancy HT room or anything)?

(dont get me wrong - I *really* value the advice on these forums - and I *really* want to like to SBS-01; I have already started selling my current components, and started making plans to integrate the new speakers into my HT setup...)

So to my question/point:

What would be the CLOSEST equivalent to these SBS-01 5.1 System, both from the PRICE ($1000) and SOUND QUALITY point?

I have heard the Klipsch Synergy system at a friend's place; not sure how much it cost him, but I think it was in the ballpark. Would that be a close competitor? What other systems? Please educate.

SQ? No idea, since I've never heard them.

Price? Well the SVS package is basically $530 shipped for 5 speakers and a sub for $470 shipped.

For $540 shipped you could get a 2 pairs of the Athena AS-B1.2s with 1 AS-C1.2 center, or for $300 shipped you could get 2 pairs of the B1s with 1 C1 center and spend the remaining $700 on a better sub than the SVS PB10...maybe the PB12, or a Hsu STF-3 or VTF-3.

If this is is primarily an HT rather than music system, I'd personally take the $300 Athenas and spend $700 on the best sub I could find, unless those $530 SVS speakers are just staggeringly good for their pricepoint.

For $1067 shipped, five Ascend Acoustic HTM-200's and a Hsu STF-2 would be interesting.

Of course, you can step up to five CBM-170 setup with the STF-2 for $1207.

Right now, five Onix Ref .5's and a ULW-10 sub is $999 shipped.

Only you can tell if they are competitors by listening.
Most of the Best Buy and Circuit City's will have 2-way 5 1/2" speakers that are priced very near the SVS speakers. Untill I here the SVS there is no way to tell if the internet provided better value?
Having heard many in-store brands and owning several brands of speakers, I can assure you that the SVS's will outperform anything in their price range, but, 2 points: 1) they have a liberal return policy, and, 2) your ears are the final judges, regardless as to what I or anyone else says. You won't be disappointed. Dennis
It's too soon for comparisons. You've got to figure they are aimed at Ascend, Axiom and Rockets within the ID class. How much they bite off or exceed any of these or other offerings really won't be known until next month or next quarter.

Be patient...they'll get here.
