I've just got a brand new Samsung 1080P LCD and am curious about these two settings in the TV's picture, detail settings menu - under what circumstances should they be on or off? I have a Toshiba HD-E1 and Sony PS3 connected via HDMI.


Colour Space - Auto or Wide (default: Auto)

xvYCC - On / Off (default: Off)

Well, there won't be any xvYCC color sources for years, except for some upcoming PS3 games and new and expensive Sony camcorders, so I would guess off would be the default.

jvernon is correct! xvYCC is not being utilized by many sources at the moment and should be left in the off position unless your particular source states that it is mastered for xvYCC.

Does Colour Space have anything to do with 609 (SD) or 709 (HD)? best left on auto?

Unfortunately, many manufacturers use terms such as 'wide' and 'normal' when describing color space because they use their own arbitrary settings. More specifically, they do not conform to a standard and; therefore, do not call it as such. In order to verify which color space setting is the best, it is necessary to measure and calculate which one is closest to the standard. Some displays allow for this to be adjusted/calibrated within the service menu allowing for the desired results to be achieved.

Contray common sense it looks like xvYCC=on and Colorspace=Wide gives you a "good" gamut (one would think that "off" and "Auto" would be the best option for HD/SD-soruces...). At least acordning to hdtvtest.co.uk.

Sorry to necrobump this thread. I was doing some research on the samsung color space and xvYCC settings and found the above post stating that the best results were attained with the 'Wide' and xvYCC 'On' settings.


If you dig into the article you will find that they actually used the 'Custom' option to tweak the color space.

Another necrobump. I just bought a UN40ES6150 (6100 series) and after applying the calibration on lcdtvbuyingguide.com, I decided to go with YCbCr instead of RGB out of my Panasonic BDT215. With the 10pt white balance settings from their reviewer, and Color space in Auto, I switched on xvYCC to see if it "increased detail" as Crutchfield says, or "expanded the color space" as Samsung claims it would. Nope. Only saw a diminishing of color vibrancy in some day and night scenes (e.g. the belly dancer at the gypsy camp) from the FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE BD. It was a bit like switching from Warm2 to Warm1 or Standard (things get colder, blue shades are crunched, faces lose their "flesh" appearance). Blech.


Since nothing I have really outputs xvYCC, I think it's still a needless feature in search of an application (or dumb users?).

xvYcc does nothing if the source is not xvYcc. At least that's the way it is SUPPOSED to work... xvYCC allows chroma values outside the range of 16-240. If the source you are playing (test patterns, etc.) have no color content beyond 16-240 you get just normal Ycc color space (601 or 709). You don't "add" anything by enabling xvYCC. If the TV does something different for 0-240 color patterns when xvYcc is enabled, something is not right but it might turn out to be useful if you need to expand a limited gamut... it's not SUPPOSED to work that way, but if it does, it might help in some cases.

I had no idea video games used xvYcc. I'm guessing if they do it will say on the case or something like that?

I know, but will it happen if future? Not that I'm bothered really as honestly I think the picture quality and Color is just fine now.

Not on this generation.


Who knows about next gen.


I do know that most game studios have no clue how they would even start to do that, some definitely do. Truth be told, xvYCC will likely never be implemented for games, getting wide gamut will likely happen via ultraHD.
