I plan on having a 7.1 setup. The side surrounds and rear surrounds will be hidden in columns. I plan on hanging the surrounds from the wall and slipping the columns around the speakers. The bottom of the column will be framed 2x2 with MDF covering, the top, pillared 2x2 with Speaker Cloth covering. I'd also like to do this for the front speakers, albeit the columns will be a bit larger. Also, instead of hanging the speakers from the wall, I'll sit the speaker on the top of the bottom base (the framed MDF). This leads to my question:

Do I need to fill the base of these columns with sand, similar to my stage construction? How best to attach the fronts to the base? I have spikes on these speakers, so do I just sit them on the wood, or is there a better way to secure them. Do I need to pad the wood base with anything? Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

I built mine exactly as you mentioned and filled/packed them with insulation.

I did not do my LCR with columns becasue my speakers needed 2-3 feet from the front wall to sound right.
