I've been out to Lowes and HD now looking at wood and mouldings I can use this weekend as I build my columns. There will be 4 columns, two functional (with speakers enclosed) and two more just for balance.

I would like to do nice wood columns, not professional furniture grade, but hopefully pretty close. I've built cabinets, etc.. before but I dont tend to do a lot of staining. I do not want to use veneer.

I am looking at buying nice plywood for the face/sides, and then some normal trim and some fancier trim. Both trim types will also get used elsewhere in the room on my light tray or around the room.

I can find plywood in pine, oak, poplar, and maple/birch.

I can find regular trim in pine and some oak.

I can find fancy trim in "hardwood". This is not pine and looks more yellow than poplar.

How am I ever going to get the stained wood to match if I use maple/birch plywood with pine trim and fancy "hardwood" trim??

Do I just keep tinting my stain and doing lots of test pieces to match them??

Here are two samples of what I was looking at for ideas, I wish I noted which threads I got them from to give proper credit.

I am in the same position as you. I am getting ready to purchase my wood and I am going with birch plywood with the pine trim. I have stained some sample pieces (sorry, no pics) and I found that the differance in the two woods to be not that drastic, as well as pleasing to the eye. If you go to Lowes or wherever you can buy a 2'x2' or2'x4' piece of birch, a couple of small bits of trim, stain them, put them on and around each other, and you might like the contrast. Good luck!

badata - where do you live? Someone might be able to suggest a lumber yard in your area for trim/molding in whatever species of wood you need.

You can also mail order trim if you don't mind waiting for it to arrive (it probably wouldn't arrive by this weekend).

I live west of Boston and based upon suggestions spent much of today on the phone/web. I've found two good lumber yards that have maple/poplar and a few other choices in plywood, dimensional, and some mouldings.

I'm just struggling with the decision now on how far I take this. I can see doing the columns and light shelf in maple. But, I'm not sure if I should do the door casing and the baseboard as well. Seems expensive. Might be able to just match the color and use pine. Need to decide pretty quick though. Always open to opinions and ideas !

THanks all for the replies.

So I ended up going with the maple. I am very happy with the finished look. Decided to only do natural shallac on them, which is still in progress. Below is a picture before any finishing. Thanks to all for your suggestions.
