I know you need the cable box, but I am getting mixed information on whether or not you need the digital cable service itself.

NO, not to get WPVI, WCAU or WHYY-DT or HBO and Showtime. However, you dfo need to subscribe to digital cable Plus to be able to get CSN-HD.

I understand that you need digital box from Comcast and digital service in order to get HD. (What use is digital box if you don't have service too?) I now have digital box (SD only) from Comcast and will get HD service "turned on" when done building home theater. Kevin
