Comcast HD cable box question.

369 Views 6 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  drewba
I live in Berwyn , Illinois and have Comcast HD with the Motorola box, and I have the Sony KP-46WT500. From what I understand my TV does not support 720p what it does is down-convert to 480p. But from what I have read in other threads some HD box if not all up-convert 720p to 1080i. Does the Comcast box do this? If not is there any way I can up-convert the 720p to 1080i manually?

I am pretty sure the Comcast box (which I have) does upconvert to 1080i. In fact I'm positive that the box ALWAYS outputs 1080i no matter what you're watching. Internally, what I gets I have no idea. I don't even know that Comcast broadcasts anything in 720p - it may do the conversion by itself. But the box definitely outputs 1080i already.
Are there any setting up I should do to it. As far as the widescreen, output, sound stuff like that?
Assuming that you are using the Motorola HD box, it is also worth mentioning that it has a selectable 480i override function so that SD signals can be sent 480i over the component jacks.
How do I do that? And what is the benefit? I'm new to the whole HD and HT thing. Is 1080i better then 480i?
Check this URL, this is a setup guide for the 5100. Note: you can select the output of the 5100 to match your display device.

1080i has a higher resolution than 480i. However, I have a 4:3 (non-widescreen) TV that goes into 16:9 HD mode when it receives a 1080i signal. If I want the entire screen to be filled with SD material, which is 90+% of what we watch, the TV needs to get it in 480i. Thus, the 480i override is perfect for me.

I wish that more receivers would offer this instead of requiring pushing a button to change the output.
