Comcast offers HDNet in Houston

4429 Views 34 Replies 25 Participants Last post by  Bananko
Just received a letter from Comcast yesterday. As you may know, Comcast is taking over for TWC here in Houston. TWC has offered HDNet and HDNet movies as part of a HD Plus Package in the past.

Comcast will offer a new HD Plus Tier here in Houston starting June 19th for $3 per month, and will feature both HDNet and HDNet Movies.

Think this is a first for Comcast!!

With the recent announcement that Comcast bought out Insight Cable, which offers HDNet, this is good news.
This could be very similar to other cannibalized systems where Comcast will continue to offer HDNet until the previous carriage agreement runs out. Once that agreement expires, its usually turned off or replaced with other programming.
I am hoping that mcuban pitchs in here soon....

I tell you that $3 bucks for the HDNets is more than reasonable. I'd definitively put the $3 bucks down for the HDNets.
Only way I would agree to pay $3 for HDNet is if mcuban buys the Cubs

That happened here in Memphis. Comcast bought out TW, and then in February (I think) Comcast dropped HDNet's.

This seems a little different. Comcast has created a new HD Plus Tier (a first for Comcast?) for the HDNETs and is making a specific charge for this (new) tier. To the best of my knowledge this has not happened before. They were simply removed, with or without replacements channels.

This seems a much more permanent scenario.
Maybe you are correct...

But Comcast did send me a letter specifically announcing the new tier and the availablity of the service here in Houston. It would seem like bad public relations to push my signing up for this new tier when they knew that they would pull the plug within a short time. Instead, if they were prudent, they would allow me to see HDNet for free during that short period.

By the way this letter was addressed only to those of us who are already subscribers to the existing HD Plus tier. I think they are making extra efforts for us HD subscribers to not bolt to Direct TV.

I could see this as part of an HD only tier.

I would move discovery Home Theatre, universal HD and Mojo to this tier.

HD locals should remain part of limited basic.

HD simulcasts should be offered at NO EXTRA charge to those who get the SD channel.

You get ESPN,you get ESPN-HD.

A new tier for Comcast, but they are just continuing the tier that TWC had, so they still could pull the plug on these channels when the agreement expires, by not renewing. I see your point that they sent letters about this, so it seems like they will keep them, but I am skeptical. I think they might just have a while to go on the agreement, so they want to let you know you will be keeping these channels, so you don't bolt; I hope I am wrong.
You (or someone) has been posting this all over the net. All Comcast is doing is honoring the existing contracts until they expire. Once expired, the channels will be dropped, just like they have in all the other markets Comcast has bought.

Maybe one day HDnets will come but this is not a sign of that. Sorry.

I don't see HD Locals ever leaving Basic, as they are sent in the clear, anyway.

As for the HD cable channels, your idea makes sense. However, they like getting people who almost all want Expanded, as is, to pony up for Digital Classic for HD Simulcasts as well as HD Exclusives.

In some areas, like here and your area, though, a few of us, actually benefit by being able to take Digital Classic or Preferred w/o Expd., so I don't like the idea.

Even if the HD tier was less than Digital Classic's $12, Expd. is ~$32 here. Although, one could go for the just the HD Exclusives. But, unfortunatley, that would mean no CSN-HD here. I believe you said, NESN-HD is actually already part of Expd. there.

In the old HD Plus Tier under TWC here in Houston, it included Universal HD, ESPNHD, HDNet and HDNET Movies. DiscoveryHD, MOJOHD, FSNHD, and TNT HD were all part of the Basic Digital Package. The Local HDs were also part of the Basic Digital Package.

The Comcast letter stated that UniversalHD and ESPNHD would become part of the Digital Basic Package and they would start a new HD Tier with only HDNET and HDNet Movies.
If I am remembering correctly, the Comcast takeover did not also take over the TWC carriage agreements because they did not take over the company, only these specific cable systems. Is that correct? If it is, this would seem to mean Comcast has an agreement with HDNet.

In the case of Houston and Kansas City (and a few other Texas Markets), Comcast and Time Warner co-owned the systems through a partnership. Time Warner was the operator in all systems, while Comcast remained silent.

As of January 1, Comcast took exclusive control of the Houston market, and Time Warner took Kansas City and the others. This is a direct result of the dissolution of the partnership. The rebranding of the Houston market is just one of many steps to complete this transition.

Since they are separating out the two HDNets, it appears to me to be an interim step in anticipation of eventually removing them, even if it is a while from now. If they had left them with the other HD channels, then I would say there was a better chance of them staying.

Or maybe they are testing the waters to see if they get enough subscribers to think about expanding that tier nationwide.

In other places where Comcast took over cable service and didn't separate the HDNets out they were still removed.
