Commercial Plasma Screen Coating??

519 Views 3 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  bri1270
I have a Panasonic TH42PWD8UK, and it looks like the screen (glass) has a coating on it. I was in Sears the other day, and I was looking at the TV's and I noticed that the consumer models didn't "appear" to have that same film on the glass. Is really the case or are they the same? Do the consumer models have a protective screen over the glass? Just curious.

The Sears one could've been coated in "windex"...

If you're talking about the Panasonic consumer models, they do have an anti-reflective coating. While my plasma is much less reflective than the 32" HD Tube TV it replaced and is a big improvement in my living room, it will still reflect things in the room if the room is brightly lit (bright or direct sunshine, massive uncovered windows, bright lighting and table lamps, etc) but less so than the old tube. There's only so much they can do without interfering with picture quality i guess.

Could it be that your Commercial model has more coating than the Consumer models? Since the 8UK is meant to be used as a sign at a business maybe they use a more anti-reflective coating since this sort of environment is much more likely to reflect things in the screen. If so that would make the 8UK more suitable for a brightly lit room in a home and may make it unecessary to get an LCD.

I don't know if any of the other brands use such a coating or not, but with this much glass area they should be !

That's what I was thinking Randy - The Anti-reflective layer appears to actually be raised a bit off the glass, where as the consumer models didn't have that "effect."

I'm really surprised they don't have or offer a protective cover for the glass as well. My older RP CRT has a plexi glass shield in front of the screen, which is removeable. It would have been nice to have that option with the plasma as well.
