commercial setup ???

Hello,

Newbie here. I have been asked by one of my customers to do a layout for an audio system for a grocery store. I have a security company, but have not messed with commercial audio. My question is what is your guys suggestions for a setup. I don't think they want anything extravagent. They only want to play music from cd player, computer, etc. They already have a p.a. system, but it is horrible for music (outdated 1980's). The customer area of the store is about 13k square foot. I am looking for in ceiling speakers. I am hoping to find something around $100 /speaker for them. Thanks for letting me know what your opinions are.

We install Bogen 70volt Audio systems for Commercial applications. http://www.bogen.com/products/mixeramps/

Had good luck with the Gold Series. I buy from www.Targetd.com , ask for Burt.

Amp wattage will be dictated by the number of speakers your using and that depends on ceiling height. Call Bogen and they will spec it out for you. Your looking to have the audio balanced as you walk through.

You can get the speakers with or without volume control on speaker. For the small difference, I always get with Volume Control which can help get the system balanced or lower volume in areas like the Cash Register. There a Ceiling Tile brackets for Drop-ceilings.

fyi - 70volt speakers are wired in series (daisy chained) with standard 16g or 18g speaker wire. Most 70volt Speakers will have multiple wires coming off the winding that set the wattage of the speakers.

As for music source, I recommend XM or Sirus Commercial Account which makes them legal (Copy Right) and no commercials.

Hope your not local to me......

Good luck....

I thought in 70-volt systems everything was wired parallel?

What class of wiring is 70-volt considered? By that I mean for Code purposes can you wire like low voltage stuff, or does it have to be done more like 120 VAC wiring?

Lots of interesting reading on commercial sound here http://www.jblpro.com/pages/tech_lib.htm . No doubt other places too. Check out more of the links on the left too.

Here's one that seemed quite relevant for some good info to start with http://www.jblpro.com/pages/Real%20Coverage.pdf .

Yup, all speakers in a chain running in constant voltage are in parallel. If you did them in series, it would be like an old string of christmas lights, remember the pain of trying to find the burnt out one?!

Also, you may want to check out your state code for 70v runs, some require the cable to be in conduit at that voltage level, here in Minnesota we don't, and can run low-voltage type wire (usually 16 AWG is plenty, but be sure to calculate your wattage on the line).
Oh yeah, how high are the ceilings, that will really determine how many speakers you need...
Parallel wiring, my bad...

JBL does have some excellent white papers....
Thanks for all your help guys. The ceilings are appx. 14 ft. Don't worry CWC, I am on the WV, OH border. You'd have to have a large coverage area to reach Parkersburg, WV lol. I am going to recommend XM, never really thought about the copyright thing, thanks.
I got some inwall Klipsch speakers during a closeout at www.ubid.com . They were about 60% off MSRP. I have seen in-ceiling speakers there too. New in the box stuff.
