I tell people my commercial skip works about 70% of the time. It works more like 83%+ of the time, but the 70% accounts for little spats when it doesn't seem to be working at all! There is a reasonable likeliness that one of those spats gave you a bad first impression.

If time goes by and it presists consider these:

>In the past some have claimed that CA works better if you go in setup/Default playback and turn on CA as the default. When you start each show CA will already be set to 'ON'. Those people say if you start a show with CA OFF then push the CA button to turn it ON then CA doesn't work as good. There's a good chance it's rubish (from what I can tell), but having CA defaulted to on is something you'd want to do anyway. Let us know if it seems to help

>Poor video signal. If you have many splitters, you probably have low/poor signal. If you have spliters with unused outs that arn't terminated the signal will also degrade. You can try running the cable line directly to the ReplayTV and see if it does better. You can have a cable company do a decible reading of your line (watch out for service charges, ask, and/or go on a monthly protection plan first). you can get a signal booster. Recently there was a thread recommending a good booster (be carefull to get a good booster)

just some thoughts, hope it helped

It's also possible your unit is the problem, but in general that seems less likely compared to the other possible causes

It wasn't rubbish and it wasn't that CA worked better. There was a bug

where if you didn't have CA selected in the popup menu, the CA button on

the remote would not be able to turn on CA (despite telling you it was

doing so). The easiest way to have CA turned on in the popup menu

was to have it turned on by default.

I think they fixed the bug but I haven't bothered checking.

As far as I can tell, that bug has been fixed. I have both of my 5040's set with the default of "Commercial advance OFF" in setup (and unchecked in the pop-up menu) and it works fine when I toggle the CA on and off during a show w/ the button on the remote.

Be patient Firebird.... it works better on some shows than others.

Try a few different shows and tell us again if it works.

Also... as was stated, quality of the video feed matters alot.

Now that you guys mention it...my signal to my cable box is really low. We have it split many ways. the cable company came out months ago and said we DO need a booster but we never got it. I cant hardly pull my digital chanels without it being cut on and off by a weak signal..where is a good place to find a booster? thanks guys !

Many cable companies will furnish you a booster free to keep your business if a guy comes out and his tester says your db is too low (from the wall not after all the splitters). Carefull, some companies will charge you $$ for a service call particularly if the db reads to be an acceptible level. Ya should get the cheap $3 a month insurance (or whatever it is) probably before you call them.

When talking to customer service, try to figure out if you are talking to someone receptive of the idea before they start takiing down notes on your account. If they seem negative idea excuse yourself and call right back and fish for a push over customer service person.

If all else fails, get a booster yourself. I don't know alot about the booster models, but knowledgeable avs member sfhub gives testimony to this model in this thread.
