my sister in law is involved in conversion of a theater into a playhouse and i have an opportunity to aquire the screen when it is removed. unfortunately, she knows nothing about it other than "it's big", so i don't yet know the mfr or any technical specs, or even condition. no dollar figures have been thrown out yet, i think that i can get it for cheap, if not free.


any opinions on potential value? could it be divided up into many smaller screens for HT use? is it even worth pursuing?

I think you will find that the screen perforations are considerably larger than those used in HTs. The holes in an HT screen ar about the size of a pin while the holes in a commerical screen are larger than the tip of a ballpoint pen.

that is one thing that i had thought about after posting, that it would be a perf screen. that certainly lowers my interest.

I remember when I worked in a Theater as a kid (I guess I still am a kid and that is why my dad keeps telling me I don't know [email protected]), the perfs in the screen looked to be about the size of one of those older tank-top plasticy sports jersey shirts.


Also, screen go through hell. Ever try getting the residue of a GummyBear/Dot/Crow/JuJuFruit/Dollar/any other type of gummy gel candy of of a Movie Screen? It doesn't come off. The damn hellions would suck on a good old JuJuFruits for a while and then launch'em up on the screen to see which one would be the first to slide down. Nice long sticky streaks on the screen. Just make sure it is in good shape and not marked or ripped.


Now after all this complaing, it still would be cool to have wouldn't it!!

If you don't want it, maybe somebody else here would want it, especially if it's for free (plus some shipping costs perhaps). Sometime down the line i may turn the big unfinished basement-like area under the house into a big theater room (could seat about 30-40 people), and a screen like that could certainly be great then, even if it has the big perforations. I'd be interested to learn more at least, like size of the screen.

Just as a point of reference. Commerical screens are not suitable for the home NO MATTER HOW BIG YOU HT WILL BE...unless you are talking about 150 seats or more.


They attach to the frame by a method called "lace and gromet"...no snaps.


You would have to be sitting a minimum of 25 feet back from the screen before the perforations become invisible and then that might be too close.

25' back is quite a distance. I could do that in that room i mentioned, but it would leave the majority of the floorspace unused... that area could be used for other purposes while not watching a movie maybe http://www.avsforum.com/ubb/smile.gif But seriously, i can see how such big perforations would make the screen unsuitable for normal HT use. the cool factor would be very high, but performance is a biggie, as well.
