I'm looking at a pair of JBL S-38s to replace my current S-26s (and move the 26s to the back, to complete my 7.1 setup ;) )

My question is - how do the S series hold up to the S-II series? The S-38-IIs are a bit cheaper, from what I've seen, and the S series are getting harder to find. I know the S-IIs have a re-engineered port, and a protective plastic over the tweeter.

Has anyone done a side-by-side A-B comparison? I can't find any local retailers that have both models.

I highly doubt you could hear a difference between them. The port change was to get Bose of their back, won't affect performance in a way you could audibly observe.

The rest of the changes are mainly cosmetic and won't affect performance either. I'm currently running a mixed set, Series I S38 with SeriesII S26 and SCenter. I notice no tonal mismatch.
