Hi all,

I've been surfing around the site for a while and thought I'd ask a few q.'s. Hopefully someone's got time! (Note: I'm in the UK).

I'm about to get a NEC 6PG Xtra with new(ish) tubes and a Focus CS-1 processor. I have a Toshiba SD900E DVD player and a 7ft 4:3 Da-Lite screen. I think the NEC has RGB input only.

Now I'm a little confused about the scaler and it's BEST setup.

1) Should I run the 900E's 420p progressive scan component into the CS-1 then upsample to 720p for the NEC?

2) Should I run the 900E's 420p progressive scan component into the CS-1 then upsample to 1080i for the NEC?

3) Should I run the 900E's 420i interlaced component into the CS-1 then upsample to 720p for the NEC?

4) Should I run the 900E's RGB scart output into the CS-1 then upsample to 720p for the NEC?

All of the above are just best guesses! I know the CS-1 has lots of custom options, would it be best to use one of them?

Many thanks for your time,

Tim

The 4:3 was for flexability....

Thanks for mentioning that though, I missed it!

Still deciding wether or not to keep my TV.

How easy did you find you 6pg to set up?

Thanks, Tim

It depends, ive been into the crt for a very long time so i can set up a pg in about 15 min. They are definatly more complicated than a barco or a sony but IMO the picture is better. Yours probaly doesnt have point card installed as most of them dont. So you dont get zone convergence like a Sont , but trust me its not necessary. You do have the full setup remote right? Hi there,

Yep I have remotes (I believe a service remote too). I do have point convergance on this one although I've been strongly advised not to use it!

15mins!

Any pointers as to wether I should re-set the whole unit then start from scratch and which parameters to tweak in which order?

Thanks, Tim

The point card should only be used for the final tweak-in and clean up- used in this way, its very useful.

Do you have the setup/installation manual in PDF or hard copy? It'a available on the net- I"ve found it as nec9pg_ge901.pdf - do a google search.

This spells out the setup order. Also, in the ADJUST menu there's a STEP THROUGH MENU in which the projector automatically guides you through the adjustment items, based on the setup procedure shown on page 31.

IF you want to do a really "clean" and detailed job, I strongly recommend you get Tinman and Feathers archive doc (see the sticky thread above) on setting up the PG series projectors. And you DEFINITELY should setup a new signal entry and make sure everything is zero'd out to the mid point prior to doing your mechanical alignment.

If you're using the default throw and configuration as the last setup, then you won't have to go through setup configuration, but in my case I had to do everything from scratch. The first time is the "hardest", but it get's much easier once you've become familiar with the whole process for the PG - it's a bit different and more involved than my old Zenith. The upside is that you can get an excellent picture- I'm quite pleased with my 9PG+, and I bet you'll like your 6PG quite a bit.

As to what resolution you should use, you may want to experiment with the scaler and projector and see what pleases you the most. I've used 720P in the past with HTPC, but now I'm using a Zenith DVD player which does 1080i upscaling on component output, and running that through a transcoder. The scan rate is quite "relaxed" (other than retrace), so I don't think it stresses the projector at all, certainly less than 720P; and the image (with the Zenith DVB318) is excellent; shows no sign of interlace artifcats; I think upscaling to 1080i works better from 480P than upscaling to 720P.

But I recommend you try both; of course, that means doing a singal entry and alignment and covergence setup on both.

Regards,

Jon

Component interlaced into CS1 works well.

Scart RGB isn't compatible with the CS1.

Progressive component will get round sync instability problems that CS-1 shows with some projectors.

XGA (1024x768) 4:3 gives a 576p line image for an embedded 16:9 frame.

50 Hz or 75 Hz refresh.

Thanks all. Appreciate your help.

I shall try interlaced into the CS-1...

What is your overall opinion of the CS-1?

Should be fun getting all this up and running!

Thanks, Tim

None of the above. HTPC is the way. ;)
