I need serious help with a home system I'm trying to put together. The only thing I have so far is a Samsung 5085 DLP. I would like to add speakers (I hear BIC is a good bang for the buck) and whatever else I need. I listened to some Klipsch speakers last night for ~$1,000 at Ultimate Electronics. They sounded good but the more expensive ones sounded a lot better...(DUH). The problem is that I don't know what I need. I assume an amp, DVD player, (recorder?) and who knows what else.

What components would compliment the Samsung? I'm talking about performance, not looks. I have cable TV and would like to keep the costs down as low as possible (~400/tuner, ~$200?/DVD player, ~900/speakers). Is it possible to get a system for this$

Just a few other newbie questions:

-What is progressive scan and is it all the same?

-Are there any decent tuners for ~$400?

-I've seen mention of digital tuners. Are they better and/or will I need one?

- How about DVD players for ~$200?

I appreciate any suggestions or comments. I am willing to do whatever necessary to get a good performing system within financial reason. If my cost expectations are unrealistic, feel free to say so.

Thank You

I guess the first question would be are you trying to do a full hometheater setup, or just a 2-channel (stereo) system?

Speakers are really a subjective area. What sounds great to one person sounds like garbage to another. Klipsch is a great example of this. Many people can't stand the Klipsch horn sound (myself included,) but other people like it. What I would recommend is listening to a variety of equipment, and perhaps look at some of the internet retailers if you are on a budget.

$900 will buy you a great pair of speakers for a stereo setup, but will not go as far when you have to buy an entire 5.1 system. The BIC's are really deserving of their price and not a very good sounding speaker out of the box. Aparently, there is a crossover upgrade available for their popular bookshelf speaker that makes a dramatic improvement in sound....you might want to research that.

Progressive scan is a different way of displaying the signal on your TV. A progressive scan DVD player displays a 480P signal (there is tons of info. on the net.) There are a variety of different resolutions that are all progressive scan, but in the context of DVD players, they are all currently the same.

There are a TON of DVD players on the market right now. A progressive scan DVD player can be had for as little as $40 now, and some people claim they work well. $100--150 can get you a decent DVD player from any mainstream manufacturer....people claim that certain ones have better picture quality or sound...again its up to you.

For the receiver, again its gonna depend on whether you want to do a full home theater setup, or just a 2-channel stereo setup.

By Tuner, are you talking about an High Definition TV Tuner for your Cable?

Maxximtl,

I want to do a full 5.1 home theater system. I don't have room for the 7.1. With that in mind, is there any recievers that really stand out for the money?

I like the Klipsch probably because there isn't much out there to choose from in the typical BB or CC stores. Do you know where I can listen to a BIC system in the Denver area? The Acoustech system is what I'm seriously considering but I am going on user feedback and reviews as a basis for the furchase. I'm not too picky and don't have the best hearing so the BIC's might suit me needs. Here is the link for this system: http://www.sonic.net/soundscape/bic/acoustech.htm

What speakers do you like?
