I have a 3 year old pioneer 433cmx plasma that has no hdmi or dvi, just component.Should i purchase the oppo 971 or 970 to get best pq over component input.I believe I heard one of these does upscale over component but not sure which one.I had a panny xp50 for years but it went bad and I would like pq to be as good if not better than that players excellent picture. Thanks Matt

The 971's stellar performance is via DVI. The component is functional but not the main reason to get the 971.

The 970HD will upscale via component with DVDs that are un-copyprotected, otherwise, 480p (but good 480p). Despite the years, the XP50 is no slouch via 480p component. 970HD does have other features: SACD, photo card reader, and HDMI (whenever you may upgrade the display), etc.

The 971 is not recommended for component.

The 970 has good component out, but will not upscale copyprotected disks over component. Homemade or backup disks where copyprotection has been removed do not have this restriction. There is also unofficial firmware available which removes this restriction; see the 970 thread for details.

Thanks, sounds like its the 970 for component.
There are Denon's for a good component out, but they are at least twice the 970 price...
