Hi,

I searched the forums, but wasn't able to find a clear answer to this question.

I have an HTPC I'm building strictly for dvd playback and the occasional mp3's. This unit will be outputting to a CRT projector with RGBHV inputs. The problem is I have a dish 811 reciever and an xbox that I also want to connect to the projector. Since they don't have HD15 out's, I'm left with the problem of getting a component signal into an RGB format and then developing some kind of switch for the multiple sources to the single input on the projector.

The way I see it, turning the HTPC into a Transcoder/Switch would work the best.

Is it possible?

So far the only way I can figure out how to make this setup work is Like this:

Dish 811----(component)---

`````````````````````|
`````````````````````|

````````````````````HT Reciever ----transcoder---switch-----Projector
`````````````````````|```````````````````````|

`````````````````````|```````````````````````|
Xbox------(componet)-------`````````````````HTPC-----
What I want is something like this:
Dish 811-------
```````````|

```````````|
``````````HT Reciever--(component)---HTPC---(vgabreakout)--Projector

```````````|
```````````|

Xbox------------

Any Ideas, comments, questions?

The best way to switch component video is via the A/V digital receiver and it's remote control (presumably you have surround sound implemented). The single output of the receiver will feed the HTPC and after scaling/line-doubling, drive the projector.

The Holo3D can be used but a nice/simple, easy to use solution for both DVD playback and component video scaling is the combination of X-Card and PDI Deluxe Card and Dscaler software. See the Combo Deal here:

I like HTPC but I would point out that there is a single-box solution that is both a scaler, component video switcher, and HDTV tuner:

This will do everything a HTPC will except play DVDs, but the combination of this box and a DVD player and an antenna would result in a combination of Dish, Xbox, HDTV, and DVD playback for your projector, and probably with 95% of the video quality of the HTPC. Optionally you could add external D-VHS for timeshifting HDTV.

Hey guys,

Thanks for the feedback. Some interesting suggestions, but I have to agree with Stranger89, on my budget my best option is probably just buying a transcoder.

I thought if I could find a PCI card that did the same thing for a similar price it might save me a lot of headaches and streamline things a little more. Oh well.

:)

Thanks again guys.

The new Key Digital transcoder has a VGA passthrough and so does Petr's (PJ3 on the forum). Either one would eliminate the switch.
