I realize that there is a lot of difference between cheap cables and expensive ones. But, is there any technical difference between component video cables and A/V cables.

Component video cables are just 3 color-coded video cables of the same length. Use three individual equal-length video cables and don't get them mixed up, and they'll work just fine.

A/V cables are just that

Audio/video

For component video you want 3 coax cables

not audio cables

I used A/V cables for several months for a component connection and it worked just fine. At Target they sell 12' gold plated double shielded component cables for $19.99. I just switched to these. I my opinion the $80+ Monster component cables are a waste of money.
