Hello !!

Two questions.

- What do I gain/loose by converting an HTPC(RGB) to component ?

- Can I convert S-video to component ?

Thanks,

I can only give information on the first Q:

No display device works in the YCrCb (component) color space. If you convert RGB->component, you will force an RGB->component->RGB conversion. Conversions from one format to another are normally a bad thing (some cause data loss while others introduce noise and/or non-linearities) and you are imposing 2 where there was none.

I'm guessing Extron builds an S-video->Component transcoder.

there are companies that make converters that work really well. They are about $125 dollars. I can't remember the name of the companies but I think I read about them in the latest home theater mag

I use a VHDC300 RGB/component converter prior to my NEC MT1040 or DILA G1000.

When set up properly I see no difference in quality between RGB and component.

I switched to component from RGB to my LT150 in order to get the benefit of anamorphic unsqueezing. Unfortunately standard definition material doesn't look as good in component, I guess because of the extra conversion. It is grainier and less 3-dimensional. I'll probably end up with a scaler (instead of my Iscan Pro) to solve the problem.

Hi Huckster,

that is not the entire truth...

The Panny 42" plasma converts everything to YCrCb internally before enhancing the picture with the AI chips - and then making the grid array for the different plasmas.
