Composite connection for STR-DG910

973 Views 5 Replies 2 Participants Last post by  samsurd2
I'm aiming the new SONY STR-DG910 AV Receiver but this receiver doesn't comes with any s-video connection but will upconvert all signal to HDMI output.

The question,

Will my satellite signal (they only feed us with SD material only) deteriorate a lot if I use composite to connect to it and output through HDMI? (the HDMI only "up-convert" and not "up-scale")

What i like about the DG910 is that it accept audio of LPCM through HDMI (it comes with HDMI ver 1.2a) and can accept 5.1/7.1 ch sound from it, also decode the SACD signal through HDMI, so I would have the least cables to run to the Receiver and to the TV as well.

And I would like to do all the switching from the receiver so the TV will only left if on at the HDMI connection only, no need to switch two times, off course I could link the satellite direct to the TV if I wanted but that would mean another set of cables.

Alternative another model, the STR-DA1200ES which comes with s-video inputs at a higher price but only upconvert s-video to component and only HDMI ver 1.1, so no multichannel sound from the HDMI input, I'll need the digital connection for that, and that's mean more cables.

My current 5.1 setup :

SONY KLVV40A

Samsung HD-950

Nokia Satellite DVB-T Decoder

SONY Playstation 3

SONY STR-DE545

SONY surround speakers

INFINITY Bookshelf speaker

Any advise on this matter is appreciated.

Take a look at the STR-DG1000 as an alternative ( http://www.jr.com/JRSectionView.proc...e=400000#Brand ).

It's available today for about the same price as DG910, has s-video, upconverts everything to HDMI and implements HDMI ver. 1.2a. It only has 2 HDMI input vs 3 for the DG910, however, it includes preouts, 7.1 channel analog inputs and 2 zone capability.
The STR-DG1000 is not on sale in my country, the closest is the STR-DA1200ES (only a bit different with DG1000) and it's about USD150 more expensive than the DG910, and it does not do s-video upconvert to HDMI, only to component.

That's why I'm looking into the DG910 as the priority.

However, I will check out the Yamaha RX-V661 pricing over here as the Yamaha is tends towards a higher price in here where the price might be similar in the US between the DG910 and V661.

I did a very quick peek at the Yamaha. It looks to me like the RX-V661 and the DG1000 can be bought for about the same US$ prices. The features are also almost the same. The biggest difference I noticed was that the DG1000 transcodes all analog video signals to HDMI (digital) whereas the V661 transcodes composite and s-video to component video (analog).
sigh...just got an e-mail confirmation for Sony that the DG910 will only available here in July 2007.

maybe that time the Onkyo SR-605 is out and have better features?

Here are the links to the User Manuals for both receivers so that you can compare them for yourself and decide.
