So I know I've seen a little bit about this somewhere before, but couldn't locate a good source of info for a few questions.

Is there something that works all the time? Something that isn't just a plugin for a media player? So even say, on the desktop or playing games, or.. whatever it works just the same?

Free is good, or I might as well pony up the money for an active crossover. What's the cheapest active that can do 6-8th order filters?

Here is a looong thread on the subject at diyAudio: http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/showt...threadid=63078

Personally, I have a separate computer running brutefir under linux. Only FIR filters though and while approximating IIR filters is possible, it is wasteful in terms of computing power. Then again, modern CPUs are so fast that running a bunch of filters each with tens of thousands of filter taps is easy.

Unless you use a separate computer for the processing, this requires a soundcard with drivers that allow flexible routing (loopback). RME works well, there are a handful of others but I can't recall them ATM.

Then use a VST host -

Free, not very user friendly http://www.hermannseib.com/english/vsthost.htm

Some free VST plugins:
