Can you guys recommend me a good PC software that allows copying and editing of dvd discs. All the ones that I have seen only allow straight foward copying from disc to disc. I want something that allows me to copy a dvd disc onto a harddrive, edit it, then burn it unto a dvdr disc.

DVD Author is a very cool application. Can't recall if you can burn directly from the application, I don't think so. You could use Nero or a free tool like DVDDecrypter to burn the disc (if the files are in ISO format).

Yes, the app has a burning tool although a lot of users prefer other apps for burning.

Personally, I like Decrypter for burning but the burning tool in TDA has yet to make a coaster on me.

What kind of editing you have in mind?

I would like to do the basic editing stuff found on most stand alone DVD Recorders such as adding chapters, shortening, etc. Plus, I would love to create my own menus with thumbnails of my choosing. A software that allows me to create a menu similar to ones on retail dvds would be perfect.

Bizkymo, Ok, this rules out IfoEdit, which I was about to suggest. You'll need full-scale DVD authoring tool, and previous posts already suggested one. I've only used for this purpose U-Lead Studio, some light (very light :)) version, provided with the DVD burner, and I can't recommend it, too basic and limited.

this about sums it up.

i use MovieFactory 3 at the moment. my needs are mainly analog capture from DishNetwork DVR and miniDV. my editing is light, with simple removal of scenes, commercials. and unwanted material. i will sometimes edit the chapter points, but not usually.

i'm curious about PowerDirector, but i'm not ready to fork up the clams. it looks to have a great feature set. i was not a big fan of WinDVD Creator. Video Studio is a much more enhanced version of MovieFactory. i haven't used it, but it may be the one i ultimately go with. all of the others that i've used have come with various hardware purchases, so the cost to evaluate them was nill.

read, ask, and evaluate! everyone has different editing needs, thus the variety of software available.

Thanks alot for your help guys. I will try out DVD Author to see if I like it. Tagteam, the link that you gave led me to DVD Author 1.5. But there is also a 1.6 version. Did you purposely recommended 1.5 because it's superior to 1.6?

Not in the least, Bizkymo. In fact, versions 1.5 and 1.6 are identical in every respect except that 1.6 supports DVD+R Double Layer.
