Just got both of these blurays in the mail today and just wrapped up watching both. let me say they are huge improvement over the DVD (which I had the privilege to rent but not own) I recommend if you have the DVD in your collection sell that bad boy and upgrade to the bluray. Like the film itself, there's a lot to love about Conan the barbarians 1080p/AVC-encoded transfer. Conan the Destroyer's 1080p/AVC-encoded transfer is about as close to a revelation as Cimmerian zealots could hope for! Highly recommend A+

I'd like to see more screenshot comparisons between the UK and US encodes.

I got Conan the Barbarian tonight and I am very impressed with the transfer. Better than the Blues Brothers and quite good for an older master. If Conan the Destroyer looks better which I am hearing it does it must be one stunning transfer.

UPDATE: After further evaluation, I can no longer recommend this Blu-Ray. As you can see from my original review below, I'm not a very hard person to please. All I ever ask for is just a simple unmolested 2K transfer. After evaluating the 5.1 DTS Master Audio soundtrack on the Blu-Ray, I came to conclude that this release is extremely flawed. It's completely unacceptable and should be 100% recalled. I will write a letter to Universal and can forward it to anyone who would like to submit a similar complaint. If anyone could be so kind, please post the correct complaint contact information for Universal.

To start with, the remastered soundtrack has too many mistakes to list, we are talking in the order of dozens of instances. Mostly to Poledouris' score (dropped instruments, sometimes they are mixed so quietly that they are practically inaudible, etc.), but also to sound effects. What makes this film special to me and I'm sure many other fans as well, are three pivotal scenes. And they have all been COMPLETELY ruined.

Scene 1 - The beginning of the film, where the small village is attacked, the chorus is completely missing. Sure it's there when the horsemen are riding through the woods, but once the massacre starts it's completely gone. The chorus is missing from the entire battle. The score sounds weak and awkward and changes numerous key shots and sequences. This is not just some small chunk of music that we are missing, this is the THEME score to Conan the Barbarian that has been completely erased.

Scene 2 - After the ghosts fail to take Conan's soul, there's a beautiful scene by the ocean where Schwarzenegger wields his sword. Again the chorus is completely missing. It's only just barely audible during the last second of the scene. This was an incredibly powerful moment which had a very prominent chorus. Without it, the emotional impact is missing. This is a pivotal scene in the entire film.

Scene 3 - Right before the final showdown, before Conan prays to Crom, the chorus as the horsemen approach is completely missing. This was one of the most beautiful pieces of music, completely gone, during the climax of the film. This is as unfortunate as it gets.

I hope Universal has the decency to correct the soundtrack, or at the very least include the original mono lossless. The fans deserve it. They don't have to do a complete recall, but should have it as a replacement option for those who would like to replace their discs.

END UPDATE

I picked up the U.S. release today (Universal). The film looks as good as it can without a proper 4K, OCN remaster. There's grain and dirt and the image is inconsistent throughout.

However... It's a straight modern 2K transfer, completely unmolested. No DNR, no EE, no weird new color timing (teal push), etc. And even though I would love a brand new 4K, OCN state of the art remaster, it's not going to happen. What's been release is completely competent and adequate and gets my approval.

NOTE: This Blu-Ray does not have the original mono soundtrack. Some points should be taken off for that. The 5.1 DTS Master Audio sounds very good.

You sir are a hardcore Basil fan. If you don't already have this I recommend. htp:// www.screenarchives.com/title_detail.cfm/ID/14468/CONAN-THE-BARBARIAN-2CD/

Avoid at all costs.

Sir, I understand that you are upset, but please refrain from such statements. Please understand that there are people who see value in owning the discs, despite the documented audio flaws. It's not that black/white.

Knowing of the missing audio let's me make an informed decision, and I have decided to go ahead with my purchase regardless. (French 2-pack). I'm hoping there may be a replacement issued eventually, but the discs are hardly completely worthless despite these issues.

Allow me to decide for myself whether it should be avoided at all costs or not.

If the audio is as stated, then it is a DISASTER and should be recalled. Period.

All they had to do was include the mono track. That is all. But NOOOOO.

And Nissen, you can do what you want, what do I care? You're not going to let me express my opinion on a public forum? Give me a break!

Sir, my point is you come off telling (commanding, actually) people not to buy the disc, that it is worthless to everyone. You didn't state it as your opinion, you stated it as the truth. That's what I had issues with you expressing.

I understand, and share, your outrage at the foul-up, but I ask you to consider that other people might not see it as a deal-breaker. Is that so unreasonable?

Yes, it is, when it is so beyond ridiculous. This muckup is about as bad as any we have ever seen. It's as large as Conan's chest.

Bill over at thedigitalbits has alerted the studio to this and so hopefully that is just the start of a forced movement to have this title recalled.

All they have to do is include the original mono track.

And not in 192k DD either. This is Blu-Ray. Not DVD.

if Universal does issue a recall and replacement $5 says it comes with "newly remastered video"

Just got a round to checking out Destroyer last night, and was pleasantly surprised until the horn retrieval section. My blu-ray paused shortly after the gem was placed, right about when it turned red and then jumped ahead 30 seconds, and then again at the confrontation with the guardians, right after the wizard speaks, the disc jumps ahead in the midst of the fighting. Checked the disc, and it is clean. I have two Sony CX-960s and tried multiple slots on both and had the same results every time. I assume I have a bad disc, but wanted to see if anyone else was having the problem...
