CONFIRMED - BD only mpeg2 and Single layer at launch

608 Views 10 Replies 10 Participants Last post by  Grubert
The following new thread in the BD player areas has confirmed that even Warner first releases on the Bluray will be limited to only Mpeg2.

Also, that Bluray will only launch with Single-Layer 25 Gig discs.

The combination of a smaller disc than HD DVD, along with a less efficient codec like mpeg2 does NOT bode well for the initial release of BR.

Why did you create a new thread about bd in the hddvd s/w section?

Why didn't you just reply in the original thread?

yeah this is useless in the hd-dvd software forum. all a thread like this is intended for is to start some fanboy type bitching bewteen people and that is annoying.

IMO it was posted here to gloat. What kind of response is expected from this behavior?
For the more objective it might simply serve as a useful piece of information in comparing and contrasting the two formats, but I suspect it might have been intended as a gloat given its location here. At least the thread title includes the phrase "at launch."

What I would care about is a BD player purchased now not being able to play future BDs with some different specs or codecs.

BTW, I'm getting an XA1 today because I'm tired of waiting for A1s to arrive locally. And when the AVS power buy for a BD player comes along I'll likely get on board. I don't like having to get two players at all but it's what is.

Well, crap...

I was a staunch BD supporter early on (then said "I just want HD on disc NOW" and bought into HD DVD, with an eye towards getting a PS3 down the line), but now I'm officially worried for the format. MPEG2 on a 25 GB disc? My ass.

Come on Disney (Narnia) and Fox (Star Wars), join the dark side... And bring your crown jewels with ya :D
It will be very interesting to compare the Warner releases if they are MPEG2.

It would not have been as interesting if they were the same encode as the HD DVD.

25GB still fits a decent amount of MPEG2. I guess we will all see when the discs and players are eventually released...
What the smeg is doing a BD thread in the HD DVD forum?
