Sorry about starting a new thread for this but I'm at work and don't have time to filter through other threads....

I have just received confirmation in print of the rumored price drop taking effect on August 28.

Panasonic TH42PX50U drops to $2999.99

Panasonic TH50PX50U drops to $3999.99

Panasonic TH42PD50U drops to $1999.99

These are MSRP drops, not sale prices or after-rebate prices.

Fantastic! Does anybody have a sense of how quickly, and how thoroughly, the marketplace usually reflects an MSRP drop?

Sorry if this question has been answered elsewhere already, but is there an expected MSRP drop on the industrial models? If not, can we expect to see lower prices on industrial models in the market anyhow?

Thanks,

Justin

Well, I can tell you that MSRP is dropping on some other non-plasma TVs from Panasonic as well so they are obviously doing some price drops on August 28th across the board on a lot of sets.

Looks like my 42PD25 is headed for the Master Bedroom sooner than I thought. The 50PX50 will look good in my Family Room...................!!!!! :)

Interesting that the "confirmed" drops are half of what the "rumored" drops were. Hopefully, this will trickle down into the discounts we see online and from forum supporting sites by this weekend.

I think these drops are in line with the rumor. The drop on the 42" was always rumored to be $500 and the 50" was rumored to be $1000....at least, that was my understanding of the rumor.

I don't have any information about the commercial models, but if it's true that these price drops are an effort to battle DLP it's possible that these price drops will be focused on only consumer models. However, having said that, it doesn't make sense to have unreasonably large gap in price for the consumer and commercial models so who knows.

These are very consistent with the rumor, specifically on the 50 inch and the 42-inch ED model. I think the 42HD is consistent as well, although that now looks the worst buy to me by far.

I hate to look ahead, but it appears possible that $2500 will buy a 50-inch plasma in two years. The long ago Rogo Crystal Ball put the 2007 price at around $3000. It would take two more years of 21% compounded declines in price (which would be much lower than the rate from 2000-05) to achieve the $2500 level. It would only take 14% compounded declines to reach $3000 from here.

For the purposes of comparison, compounded 21% would yield

Just so everyone doesn't think I'm nuts...here was the original rumor post. It said the MSRP was dropping to $2500 on the px50U. As I said, the offiical drops seem to be about half that.

Still good prices, just not what I was hoping for when I cancelled my order this morning. :)

No the originator of the rumor here said the 42PX50's MSRP was going to be reduced by a thousand dollars. I know because it really pissed me off that i could have saved a grand had i not bought one already. But now that i know it's only a $500 drop i'm only half as pissed :D

I'm seeing these prices locally at most big retailers but I believe they are after a $300 rebate. Maybe the rebate becomes a price drop after August 28th.

Yeah, it is a huge single price drop...they must really be trying to boost demand quickly with the "gotta have plasma by football season" crowd. Any idea whether Panny is keeping any powder dry for a followup reduction closer to year-end? Somebody mentioned additional drops around Thanksgiving, but didn't mention any source for the info.

Alex's info from CED, was right except for the 42 HD. Note my comments above about it being a "worst buy". At $2500, it'd be a somewhat compelling upgrade to the ED model. At $2999, it's a 50% bump in price and makes little sense except for real close-up users.

Once the 50-inch is
