Confused about HDMI out to run TV or Projector.

639 Views 7 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  old corps
I want an AVR that will output via HDMI to TV or Projector, but don't want to have to swap HDMI cables manually.

The Projector screen comes down in front of the TV, so only the TV or Projector will be viewed one at a time.

I've read countless threads and am very confused about how to get this done.

Do I need an AVR with Dual HDMI Monitor out or some sort of passive HDMI splitter?

I have Tivo, PS4, Xbox etc all running into the receiver (currently Denon 2312) with 5.1 speaker setup.

I want to be able to run 5.1 or even 7.1 while using either the TV or Projector for video.

Some threads say the receiver will adjust the audio to the capabilities of the TV or Projector. That would seem very craptastic to me.

Can someone shed some clarity on this?

Thanks

You can either keep the 2312CI and simply add an 1:2 HDMI splitter or upgrade to a dual HDMI monitor output AVR like the 2313CI/3313CI or X3000/X4000.

Just use a HDMI splitter connected to the HDMI output of the receiver (you only NEED one output). Then one HDMI cable to the TV and another to your projector from said splitter (splitter NOT switch). Tons of them on Amazon or Monoprice.

Receivers with dual HDMI and pretty common now. If you don't want to deal with switching cables or using a splitter a dual HDMI receiver is a very good solution.

But since you already have a decent receiver, a HDMI switch/splitter would be the cheap solution.

Perfect. Appreciate the guidance.

That switch has two inputs and one output.

The OP needs 2 outputs since he's connecting one the TV and one the projector.

You're absolutely right and on top of that it's a SWITCH and he needs a SPLITTER! I meant for this one to be posted and in my rush posted the wrong device.
THIS is what I've used.

Apologies!
