This looks like the replacement/updated model. I'd call and confirm with them.

If you go ahead and buy the new Malata 520, please let me know how it is.

Just curious about the features, are they exactly the same as the N996 or better.

I just bought the N-996 myslef, and i really like it, like i said before, so far so good!

take care!

Well after my initial posting, I read on another site that the 520 is the replacement unit. Allegedly, the internals are identical. The difference is that it is in a slimmer box, and appears to be cheaper(?)

Anyway this is the link where I found this information:

Yet going to the actual Malata site seems to imply that the 520 doesn't do NTSC-PAL conversion. The main site is here:

You can click on each player and compare them.

If it doesn't do the conversion, then they are fools, since that feature is what put this player on the map.

I can almost 100% assure you that the 520 will do PAL->NTSC conversion.

Now remember, I said almost! Even their basic players have this feature so I'd be awefully surprised if it was removed. This is pretty much mandatory if they want to sell any in Hong Kong with their mix of NTSC and PAL.

I wouldn't say it's mandatory as everyone in HK watching DVDs are using PAL and NTSC compatible displays. This is due to that all broadcasts are in PAL but R3 DVDs are in NTSC. So instead of converting the signal which might result in conversion artifact it's better to simple watch it in its native format.

Of course, the site also omits the fact that that the N996 is a region free player. I know it is because I own one.
