Hi,

First off I want to apologise for another typical thread.

I am in the process in buying a flat screen TV for by new home. I have been doing a lot of research and every time I think I found the perfect model I end up digging up some issue with the make and model. I was looking at the plasma (Samsung 6 & 7 series and the Panasonic G & S series) because of the image quality and 600hz it offers just to find out one has noticeable black-level performance issues after only a year and the other has a buzzing sound and standard program (non HD) quality issues. Plasma also have burn-in or image retention issue and I am afraid because I will have a HTPC which will have the windows task bar and window bars always in the same area.

I have started looking into LCD but they have their own issue like motion blur and lower black-level and color are less "real life". I have looked at the Samsung 6 & 7 series and the LG LG630 & LD650.

Which direction should I take given the pros and cons/issues which direction should I go? I am open to suggestion

1. Budget: $1500~
2. Seating distance: 7 to 8 feet depending
3. Size/placement limitations: 50-55" with no real limitation
4. Uses and sources: movie (DVD and HD) and HTPC for web streaming. Less then 10% of use will be for gaming and sports.
5. Room lighting: one window with blinds which keeps out 90% of the light on a bright sunny day.

Thank you for you help,

Kris

Burn in and IR on Plasmas are much better or if not gone as long as you dont abuse it right away like leaving on pause etc.

Light wise it doesnt look like it should be a concern for Plasma

I have seen good feedback on PN50C680.

And other choice would be LN55C630

Let me know if this helps, this should be your top choice IMO while working in your budget.

Roman O,

I will have a look at your review in-depth tonight at home. Did you have any buzzying issues with your Sumsung Plasma? This seems to be an issue which is known and coming up alot in forums?

I prefer the quality of Plasma which is why I was disapointed when I saw the issues Panasonic and Sumsung had with their plasma.

Thanks,

Kris

I personally still have my Kuros
But from client feedback it hasn't been bad. As long as the seller will support you I would not worry about it. Everyones perception and sensitiveness varies. As well as setup environment.

I wish I was looking for a TV a year ago before the Kuros were discontinued but then again i doubt it would have been in the budget. I appreciate your feedback Roman O.

Anyone else have a suggestion or would like to confirm Roman O advise?

Thank you,

Kristopher
Yea instead of pricing going down at the end they were going up, let me know if I can do anything else for you.
There are more cons than pros for plasmas. LCD's have caught up to plasma in a lot of areas. The blacks are great as well as the refresh rate. The newer LED LCD's look fantastic, use little energy and are super thin. Go to your local Best Buy and compare a plasma screen next to a LED LCD and then tell me what you think.
If u are using for HTPC, I suggest you use LCD. Plasma came a long way on IR but anecdotally based on the help threads here, it will save you some anxiety.

On the other hand if you like realistic color and 24p movie feel, then you need a plasma. So you got to decide which is more important to you.

Best Buy store lighting is not a good gauge of PQ as discussed frequently.

The newer LED LCD's do 24p just fine. I have a Samsung LED LCD and find it very enjoyable to watch movies.

Feels like I am trolling, which is not my intent, but you can get more info here:

And of course it also depends if you like realistic or vibrant colors for your viewing.

I feel I'm getting both with my Samsung LED. IMO.

I left that part for my wife who based a TV on the image in the store without understanding the TV setting and video feed aren't ideal.

Which LCD around the $1500 price range would you recommend? Are any of the LG and Sumsung I mention above any good?

Thanks,

Kris

Take another look at the Panasonic G20 it's a very good screen. It's not as thin but IMO the pic is one of the best for your dollar.

BTW: the whole thing about not getting a real world picture at the store is very true. Have the salesperson change the picture setting at least to standard. (this is also why I made my manager turn all the lights on the back wall at my store off
)

That's why I would never buy a set without having the opportunity to have the controller in hand.

I was ready to buy the Panasonic G20 until I read about the black-level performance issue:

I am a little afraid of buying one because of this and image burn-in from HTPC (the windows task bar and so on).
Did Panasonic tell you about the surprise inside their plasma t.v's? At a time of their choosing the deep blacks will turn to greys. Have Fun!
Is Panasonic planning on on fixing this issue?

You don't know what you're talking about. You need to stop trolling all these threads with your ignorant Panasonic posts.

You know as well as I do that there is indeed a problem with some of Panasonics Plasmas. I definitely do know what I'm talking about. Why don't you go on over to the Panasonic Plasma threads and see what their customers have got to say! No Worries!
