connect Iphone directly to an Amplifier?

All:
my kid has a dance birthday party this weekend that I need to setup a quick ad hoc sound system for them, but don't want to unhook/uninstall my main system to do so. I'm thinking of just hook up the iphone 6 for music, using the 3.5mm to RCA adaptor, directly to a spare 2ch amp that I have around and connect the a pair of speakers, then control the volume using the Iphone volume. Can I do that? or the signal from the iphone is not enough to drive the amplifier and I would need a preamp for that? I can give it a try tonight but thought to run with you guys now so I can plan ahead.
Thanks

It will most likely work. I've done similar through a receiver.

Great! Thanks for the input. I'll try it out tonight and will report back. I just need it to loud enough for the kids to dance and have fun, not need to have the best sound quality!
I do that sometimes with my iPhone 6. Stream music from IHeartradio or Spotify thru my old receiver. Make sure you have the phone's volume all the way up, and control volume with receiver.

yes, you can. Do you have an old iPOD? The one thing to consider before using your phone, is alerts and notifications, let alone someone calling you while the music is playing. you might try and get a Google chromecast audio (CCA) puck, if you can find one. Originally only $35. They have been discontinued by Google but are generally still available. Since the CCA is a pre-amp, you can stream from your phone, and control the volume, without getting all those annoying alerts, etc...

another possibility for a pre-amp is a cheap 2 - 4 channel mixer from a music equipment store ( guitar center) many time they have used equipment as well. (I just did a cursory search on used mixers at guitar center and bunch can up from about $12 - $25. You'll need a couple of 1/4" in to RCA adapters...

good luck
