Hi all,

As you may notice I'm new here so sorry for the noob question...

A friend of mine has a 1080P tv and she has her p.c. hooked up to the VGA input on the tv. She only has integrated graphics so no dvi or hdmi. I thought I could just set the resolution to 1920 x 1080 and have the image scale properly through the VGA signal but no dice... when I set it to this resolution, the tv says 'invalid signal' or something to that effect. Originally she had it set to a low, non-native resolution and so the aspect ratio wasn't right and can't watch movies correctly, etc.

The manual for the tv says the vga input is capable of vga, svga, and xga. All of these are lower res from what I understand. I'm assuming that this means that 1920 x 1080 signal is incompatible with the vga input on the tv. However, the hdmi inputs on the tv are compatible with 1080P. So I'm thinking that I'll get a video card with DVI and hook this up to the tv via HDMI using a DVI-HDMI cable.

I don't know the model of the tv but I wanted to make sure that this should be ok. Any comments are appreciated.

I know on my Macs, I need to go into my Mac video settings and check the "over scan" box to get everything to work in the resolution department. I am sure it is probably the same on a PC.

Thank you for pointing this out to me... which leads me to my next question of what gpu drivers are 'best' for this application between ATI and Nvidia? Also how much video ram do I need for 1080P? Specific pci-e card recommendations (hopefully in the range of around $50) are welcome.

Well, I really don't think it will take much in regards to video ram and I would be of no help on the drivers. I know my older intel Mac Mini outputs HD just fine as does my Apple TV and a much older Power Mac G5. I would say anything with at least 128mb of video ram (Mac Mini) and you should be fine for general viewing. Maybe head on over to the HTPC thread and ask there?
