While I realize that I can buy a Roku for $99 to access Netflix instant watch service, I have a Dell 1525 laptop with an HDMI output and I'm wondering if I could simply run an HDMI cable from my computer output into my Panasonic AE-900 to get the same results? Would it make any sense to run my computer through my OPPO 980-H DVD Player to watch streaming movies? Any tips to improve the viewing experience would be most appreciated by this Netflix newbie.

Sure. You'll just need to set the PC to an output resolution the display accepts. This can sometimes be a challenge to get things to be right particularly with laptops which usually have stripped down video cards or integrated video which don't offer a full complement of adjustment options.
