I know this is the media player area, but we HAD a good dialogue going on regarding the pros and cons of the upcoming 400 disc Sony BD player vs. a HDD-based media player in another thread. That thread though, seems to have disappeared.

Anyways, here's the guts of why I'm LEANING (key word) towards the changer now.

1. Cost.

BD Changer: It appears the non-es version of the changer will be about $800. That's it, 400 movies, plug and play.

Media Player: 400 movies @ 30 GIG's apiece = about 12+ TB's of storage. Now, even at the lowest end of TB HDD's price-wise, you're looking at $1200+. This of course doesn't even include my ps3 or other device to stream.

2. Ripping media. I already own 200+ BD's and frankly, I don't want to even consider the time and effort required to rip these to a HDD. Nevermind another 200 discs.

3. Coordinating all of these HDDs. I mean crikey, 12 HDD's (or even 6-7 (2) TB units)? I simply do not have the physical space, to begin with. Secondly, I likely lack the CPU expertise of chaining them all and conducting proper back-up strategy without either losing my mind or jacking the whole process up.

4. Lack of BD menu/title/playback functionality. Unless I'm terribly mistaken, it seems ISO's and FF RW functionality are still missing and/or cumbersome with the majority of streamers. I guess I want them.

5. No BD live with a media streamer. Seems this may be an actual worthwhile aspect in the future. Not a dealbreaker, but nice to have, nonetheless.

6. Plug and Play. Prolly the biggest one, here. I'll be the first to admit that streaming, as it currrently stands, is simply beyond my scope at the moment. Really, it just seems that it's more work than I want to go through.

When storage is more affordable, LARGER (a 20 TB HDD, anyone?!), ripping becomes less time-intensive, all of the elements of BD are included, and we have an easy-to-use device (heck, just a box that can download and store a ton of BD-quailty films and connect to your HT) that perhaps incorporates the three elements, I think I (and millions of others, surely) will make the jump you pros already enjoy.

As it stands now though, it's just too much for me. That said, if the Sony's GUI bombs or another significant hurdle arises, you can bet that I'll again be revisiting the idea of streaming.

Finally, cheers to all the streamers here, BTW, I actually admire the effort and expertise you folks possess and implement to achieve what we all want: easily accessed HD movies/music.

respectfully,

James

Admittedly, the 2 biggest faults of the changer (to me, anyway) is the lack of multi-room capability (although a sign on display at CEDIA said it WAS multi room capable...obviously almost certainly same source, though) and the lack of speed when going from movie to movie (although this wasn't a main concern of mine, seeing I don't do a lot of movie "back-and-forthing"). Other than that, as long as i-net content is accessible and d-loadable on the changer, I don't see any other significant upside to a media player.

A blu ray changer allows one to consolidate 400 movies in one place and (hopefully) provide a GUI that places anyone of them 1 or 2 clicks away from playback. 400 BD cases sitting in your garage or attic instead of a shelf is nice too.

BTW- I was an inch away from purchasing a popcorn hour, but my above factors are ALL still in play...really, regardless of what MP I choose.

In case this may effect your decision, the upcoming Popcorn Hour C-200 will support a BD drive (if you choose), as well as BD iso streaming (with menus, BD-Live, etc).

Yes, I think I heard that elsewhere. Hopefully, with the ability to rip to an external HDD!? Although I'm sure I am adding that at $200 on top of an already 2-$300 streamer? Crap. Throw that on top of a 12 TB's of storage and you're likely pushing $1800.

It does help a bit, but all of those HDD's is still a big hurdle (both $ and space-wise). What about menus and playback functionality...any hope there?

I'm not even holding my breath for BD live (again, not a real deal-breaker anyway).

thanks for the info,

No "real" info, but it seems like at least a few in the know who say the "ES" (elevated standard) version will ship in august and be around $1800 and a standard version around October at about half the price.

The ability of these devices to play "burned" hi def content on BD's is one of my hope of hopes.

Cool, thanks for the info.

I'm pretty disappointed the ES version doesn't offer SACD support. Looks like the launch PS3 may be the best SACD released. Was hoping for similar DSD->PCM conversion in this
At least it has Super Bit Mapping (though I assume that's for video).

Guess I'll never find an answer to SACD distribution through the house
It's a shame, I like the format.

Do the Blu Ray players still take all day to load a movie? That's big my biggest beef with them (except for the PS3). I hate popping a movie in the tray, then waiting five minutes for the menu to come up. A changer is nice because my entire library would a click away, but it still has that long loading time issue...

Also, does the new PCH use an RF remote? Since I use a Pronto, that would be a problem for me.

Mastermaybe, I'm with you on this one. I watch and collect many tv shows on Bluray and DVD and have about six terabytes of storage and will probably max out a ten but ripping bluray disks doesn't have nearly as many options, or is as mature as ripping dvds. Also, even if you have 30 terabytes of storage, you still will eventually need more storage for your music, photos and documents. Then, when I think of how few times I actually re-watch most movies, I don't think it is worth me ripping my Blu Ray movies. However, storing them in a changer will hopefully be the ticket for me. According to the screenshots on Engadget of the Xcross media bar's GUI, it looks pretty nice. Hopefully the players aren't to slow too slow loading discs for my marathons of Mad Men, True Blood, Band of Brothers, Battlestar Gallactica etc.

Does anyone have any information on Gracenotes VideoID/MusicID database accuracy? That's where the changers will be pulling metadata from.

GO check out our BD changer thread in the BD player area. Wealth of info there, including screen shots.

The ES is already shipping.
