Because of my tinnitus/hyperacusis, I cannot tolerate the dynamic range in today's action movies. "Night Mode" on my Denon AVR-1513 doesn't do much, even when set at maximum. Then I discovered that my Oppo BDP-103 has DRC, but only when outputting PCM. Well, in trying to set that up, the closest option was LPCM. Is that equivalent to PCM? At any rate, we watched "I, Robot" last night, and with the Oppo's DRC on, the dynamic range was no more compressed, and almost seemed expanded compared to the Denon alone.

I've seen a couple of external DRC units that seem intended for HT applications, but they both said they were 2 channel. I assume I'll lose surround and what not if I use one of those. Does anyone know of a 5.1-compatible DRC unit that has consumer-type connectors (preferably coax or optical) that doesn't cost an arm and a leg?

Thanks,
Jeff

Thanks, Ray. I guess I need to find out if my Denon has "96 khz support." It's not clear from the manual that it does.
