As I'm looking to make a final decision next week on which PJ to buy (the HS-10 or Z1 / Matinee 1 HD) a couple of things stand out..

First of all, I know the HS-10 has a 1200 ANSI lumens rating. Whereas the Z1 / 1 HD has 700 ANSI lumens. Going back to a projectorcentral.com review (Epson TW-100) it states that a 700 ANSI lumen PJ can look just as bright as a 1200 rated (given a dark room and how the human eye adjusts to brightness). So I figure this might be a non-factor for the HS-10 vs. Z1 / 1 HD.

However, the contrast ratio of the Z1 / 1 HD is 800:1 vs. the HS-10's lesser 700:1 rating. Will this make a difference? Could it be the Z1 / 1 HD might look better in certain applications that it can natively play back (i.e. DVDs)?

The battle rages on in my mind...

Z1 / 1 HD ("The Underdog") vs. HS-10 ("The Heavily Favored Opponent") :D

MVic - Specs aside, from reports so far you can count on the HS10 to be a much brighter PJ than the Sanyo. The difference between a 700:1 and an 800:1 contrast ratio shouldn't be noticeable. Throwing in the haphazard ways contrast specs are thrown around and you should consider this a wash unless reviewers starting seeing it differently.

You should try to get in to see the Z1 and determine how big an issue the screen door is for you. If screen door, bightness and good HDTV performance aren't going to be issues for you, I would expect their performances for DVD's to be otherwise very similar.

Good input, HTCrazy. Thanks.

I can't believe I'm teeter-tottering so much between the Z1 / 1 HD and HS-10. This damn forum is driving me to the brink of insanity! ;) It'll be all good when I'm in front of my brand new PJ, with the wife and enjoying my Movie-Theater Brand Popcorn. Wait, is Movie theater brand better than regular popcorn?!? :D

I'm assuming the contrast rating of the HS10 improves with cinema black on. However, this is going to decrease brightness as well as black level so that may be a wash from a contrast ratio standpoint. Any thoughts?

I know this has been said a thousand times before..........you need to view the PJ's that are on your list. I realize this is tough, but it is necessary to save you from buyers remorse. Buying a PJ based on specs is more risky than a trip through the local casino!

I was bent on buying a high rez PJ.....so I picked up a TW100 because it looked pretty good when compared to the similar rezed PLV-60HT and 70HT. But when I compared it to the AE300 (lower rez), I was puzzled by a lower rez PJ looking better than the higher rez PJ. Needless to say, because I saw both PJ's with my own eyes, I ended up buying a PJ that I had previously ruled out. Kinda weird. I am still giddy about my decision.

The specs for the TW100 and AE300, contrast and light output, are pretty similar yet the two displays are wildly different. BTW, 99.9% of the people that I showed the PJ's to preferred the AE300's picture to the TW's picture. Specs are kinda like "smoke and mirrors".

Sorry for rambling on.

MilleniumFalcon,

From what I'm hearing... you think the Z1 / 1 HD could look better than the Sony HS-10? I guess you're right, there is only one way to find out. I wish there was a dealer that allowed you to purchase two units and return one. I do know that you can return a Studio Experience Matinee 1 HD under a 15-day policy if you don't like it. Maybe I'll try the 1 HD first and go from there.

Well, I think the issue with contrast depends on how accurate the stats are. Maybe the Sony is actually say 450:1 while the Sanyo is truly 800:1 or very close to. Or, maybe it is the other way around. If the stated numbers are accurate (and I think they're close based on people who have seen both projectors side by side) then I doubt there is much of a difference.

Interesting HTCrazy mentions screendoor yet the original poster makes zero comments on it. Dude, I think you're a little obsessed with screendoor. But hey, when you haven't even owned a projector, I guess that is the easiest thing to comment on. Once you actually buy one, you'll start to see other things are WAY more important.
