Contrast ratios....Not reliable?

Hi,

i've been in the market for a new dlp/lcd projector for the past little while(migrating from crt land) and thought I had settled on a panny 700(only because I could get it for basically the price of a used ae100. :) ) But then I was reading on projector central that an lcd's contrast ratio even if it's spec'd as higher than a similiar dlp unit, the blacks will still be better on the dlp.

Is that simply due to how lcd's create black? Will they, no matter what the contrast ratio, always come up with a dark grey? Or is it the typically higher lumen output of lcd's that maybe hurts the rating dropping a 2000:1 down to a 8-900:1? Or something completely different? I don't know, I'm thinking this has been answered before, I searched but couldn't find anything.... Also, here are the projectors i'm in a tossup for right now, the 700 is the cheapest but for not much more I could get one of the other units...I'm leaning towards the 50HD, is that wise?

Screenplay 5700

NEC HT1000

Studio experience 50HD

Panny 700U

Thanks in advance,

Hello Tristan. As you probably already know LCDs tend to be brighter and DLPs tend to have better contrast. There are exceptions to this as there are with most things, but this is true generally speaking. From what I can tell there has been a slight inflation of contrast ratios. I wouldn’t say anyone is necessarily being deceitful, but they may be using a different system to determine that spec. At any rate, the new generation of LCD projectors have actually improved their contrast, and it’s noticeable. Have you had the opportunity to see any of these new models in person?

I've seen the new Panny, Sanyo, Epson, BenQ, and Optoma in person. Since we had a couple DLP projectors set up with them, it made for a great 'shoot out' of sorts. The LCD projectors held up very well when comparing contrast, they did very well with ambient light, and there was virtually no 'screen door' effect.

I would bet that LCD CR's over very liberal in order to compete with superior DLP black levels. You should try to demo an AE900 as it has some of the best LCD black levels, although I've read that the 700 is fairly close.

Tristan make sure you're not going to feed that 700U with a PC, that and other models manufactured around the same time (Z3?) actually clips off a set of pixels on the top and bottom when feeding through the DVI/HDMI port, as I understand.

I was going to go AE700 just like you to get something economical but still held in high regard, but that kept me away from the 700 because I am all HTPC.
I Think I need to demo some more units....Most of the stores around me cater to the uper echelon of products, so i've seen runco's, and marantz but nothing under $6-7000...Once upon a time I owned a ptae100, and was overall very dissapointed. Not so much in the picture, but just the fact that I bought it, then 3 months later it was replaced with the 300...then the 500 not long after that, leaving me with essentially a $4000 paper weight. After that I went CRT and never looked back. Until now anyways, i'll see if I can find a dealer around here that has the 900 set up, and maybe a similarily priced DLP if i'm lucky.

Anything wrong with the other projectors I mentioned? I know that 2 out of the 3 are based on the matterhorn(sp?), which is somewhat limited in resolution, and is on the 'old' side. Which isn't a big concern, i'm mostly interested in the overall picture that it can throw on a screen, contrast, accurate colour etc....and some kind of digital input with HDCP. Screen door isn't an issue either I sit far enough away that I won't notice, I hardly noticed with the 100 from my viewing distance.

Thanks for the replies so far!
