I am thinking of getting a media player (Perhaps something like D-Link DSM520). I'd have it in the living room, and connect it to my computer in the study via CAT 6 cables. I intend to play music or video originating on the hard drive of my computer in the study. But what I've seen of these media players is that they are intended to be controled via an I/R remote coupled with a connected TV. Since my video is often not on (projector to a screen, and not on during the day when I'd want to play music), I'd rather control the media player from my netbook, which is already in the living room, has a display, and a fine keyboard and mouse.

Anybody know if there is a way to control the DSM520 or any similar player via a computer on the network?

Bumping this one since I have a similar situation; I'd like to know if there's software that will run on an HTPC that can serve up HTML so I can control things (media player, IR devices etc) from a netbook. Thanks in advance!
