I'm looking into building an HTPC, but am still trying to work out all the details in my head. One thing I haven't seen covered in all the various information here is how an HTPC would control a cable box.

My cable box has a USB port so I'm pretty confident that it's not going to be a big deal. I just don't know what's involved.

Thanks for any info/advice!

Cable box has a USB port? Neat. Dont know how you are going to interface with it though.

In the meanwhile, look into Girder, and the USB-UIRT which is available from Jon Rhees at the following website:

with the two you will be able to receive/learn/transmit IR to almost any device. The unit also supports Xantech emitters as well which is pretty cool

You can also use an Actisys IR-200L to send commands to your Cable Box. I don't believe there is currently any interface to the USB port, just like the useless serial port on my DCT2000.
