Copy protection prevents all prime time DVHS recording?

566 Views 6 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  Mark Triolo
Just got a Mits hd2000u DVHS deck. I'm finding that ALL prime time OTA broadcasts will not record and give me the copy protection error on the VTR. Daytime shows record fine. I'm in the San Fransisco Bay area and am using a Samsung T165 as a receiver. Firewire interface.

Can anyone explain what's happening and how I can simply make a time-shift recordings of prime time show?

thanks much!

It is ILLEGAL for the broadcaster to implement 5c "copy never" flags on OTA FREE content. You should contact them immediately and tell them their 5c implmentation is against strict FCC mandates, and if they do not lift the 5c flags, you should lodge a complaint with the FCC.

I routinely record from HD channels at all times from the Sutro broadcasts to my

LG LST-3410 and then copy to a JVC 30000. There are no 5C issues. I also record these

same channels on COMCAST 6412 and can dump them to the JVC and then to

the LG. Comcast broadcast channels can be copied multiple times while their

premium channels such as Cinemax, Discovery and INHD can only be copied once.

I think Samsung T165 maybe the trouble maker. Sometime I use 3410 to record PBSHD get "No Record" message, too. But same time I use JVC D-VHS w/built-in ASTC tuner to record, everything is fine. In my local area, it only happens to PBSHD from time to time. The others, ABCHD, CBSHD, FOXHD and NBCHD, are trouble free.
Check your settings on your Samsung T165. It must be set to a HD resolution. When I first got mine, I had it set to 480i and connected to a SD TV, and I could not record many programs. After connecting it to my "big" 15 inch LCD TV and setting it to 1080i or 720p it worked fine.

This does not apply to his question. YOU CAN record to DVHS in HD resolutions, and he has not reported ANY issues with viewing live HD content on his display, but only recording it to DVHS using the firewire (IEEE 13943) connection.
thanks guys. I think I tracked down the problem: a finiky firewire connection between the T165 and the Mits 2000U. The copy protection message on this VTR also doubles for a "no signal" message. Seems the firewire connection can get interupted and the VTR gets no signal from the T165. If I cycle power on both units, everything works fine again. I can manually cause the problem by momentarily using the VTR's remote instead of the T165 to control the VTR. Could this be a firmware rev issue? I've check all setup parameters and everythings in line.
