My son's ps3 60g died and i need to know how i can transfer the old drive to the new ps3 80g. Using the old ps3 is not an option (its history).

The only way is to back up all the data before moving the drive over, of course if the old console is truly dead then this presents a problem. If you try to just swap the HDD into the new console it will require a format, thus erasing all the data on the drive. I'm not aware of any way to use a PC to retrieve data from a PS3 HDD as I believe it uses a proprietary format.

What happened to the old 60 gig? You could always pay Sony the $150 to fix it, its cheaper than buying a new one.

The old one would turn on for about 2 or 3 seconds then turn off. Plus there was a game in it and it would not come out. I search on line for the same problem and found a $hit load of the same thing that my son's system was doing. So, being old i took it apart and got the game out and you can guess what happened from there

Can i use a external USB HDD enclosure

thanks

You should have sent it to Sony. Anyway, since we're obviously passed the "shoulda, woulda, coulda", your sons internal HDD is non-recoverable. The minute you stick it into your new PS3, it'll format. There's no way to recover that data without having backed it up on an external hdd. The PS3 will not read it's own type of format via USB as it reads FAT32.

In short, your son's internal hdd is pretty much SOL.
