I grant this this is a Trollerific thread, it occurs to me that if everything goes wrong. And no one buys ReplayTV to continue running it. Could/Would/Should TIVO be a white knight and offer us guide data service?

Think about it. They could base it on their upcoming price increases and offer Replay owners with lifetime units a $50 upgrade to their service (assumes Replay activation was $250 and Tivo is now $299) and make monthlys pay their monthly fee.

It could save us from having bricks and it could actually be a cash gain for them.

Now I am sure many here would go hacking if that happened but MANY less technical users would probobly pay and sign up.

This wouldn't make much sense. If replay goes away and all of us suckers, I mean enthusiasts, want PVRs, we'll be buying TIVO models.

Well, I'd pay them money for the guide service, as long as they promised not to stick a TiVo UI on my Replays.

I disagree for 2 reasons. One, there is no way that any large percentage of Replay users, once bitten by a company going under would spend all thier mony over again. I just can't see that happening.

Two, It would make many potential TIVO buyers nervous if Replay oweners are left hanging. The perception that the serivce would be kept going somehow would be helped and so would their bottom line.

I agree with toots though, just guide data. I don't want my Replay to become a TIVO.

i think TiVo would have to do a fair amount of work to massage their data for Replay consumption. and ReplayZones wouldn't even be on their To-Do list ( so to speak ;-) ). I'm not sure it would be worth the effort from their point of view.

they also know most of us would eventually cave in and buy a TiVo anyway so we could get the latest features (like HD).

There have been at least 6 dozen threads over the last 10 days. SonicBlue is under Chapter 11 protection (or close to it). On the 14th or 15th this month assets are being autioned including the Replay division. D&M courted purchasing the division, but pulled out.

c'est tout,

Back to the topic. No I do not think Tivo will do a [email protected] thing for us. Why should they. Most *(not me) but most ReplayTV owners will most likely end up buy a tivo.

* I will not join the Tivo Army. I will go to Canada first

i called sonic blue's rebate center about a rebate thats taking forever, (the first one was fast) and i would have sworn i heard the customer service rep say "thanks for calling the tivo rebate center" although i could have been hearing things.

I'll save you the trouble of hours of research. SB declared Chapt 11, but said ReplayTV will be offered for sale to a company who will continue it. The leading contender is D & M Holdings (Denon & Marantz). You'll know more April 15th.

Anything else you read is just un-informed speculation or fantasy speculations.

Is this a pubic Chapter 11 audition ? I would like to be able to boo & hiss as the bids come in ;)

Yeah, I'd like a tape of you at the auction booing and hissing, but I'm pretty sure some MPAA representative would be there to make sure no one's sharing videos of anything.
