Here is how to update the firmware

http://www.bwone.com/2008/12/28/how-...your-cowon-s9/

I got this player about a week ago and I must say it's great!! Few things I wish it had are DMB, wifi, and a better UI. There's also lack of assessories and the cover for the USB port is not practical for docking... Other than that, the sound and video quality are fantastic!!!

With that said, I liked to get something off my chest... Why can't we have the best of both worlds for PMP's. Either they have a nice UI (ipod touch) or it has great sound and video (S9)?!!!

That's the million dollar question. Apple patented multitouch and threatens to sue anyone else that uses it. They also can sell devices on looks without having to have every feature or the best audio quality. I also have the S9, and almost every other player with a touch screen. The Samsung P2 has a more efficent UI, but not the Touch's smooth graphics. It sounds better than my Touch, and also throws in FM (with recording), Voice recording, and the best bluetooth features out there. The S9, iriver SPINN, and upcoming Samsung P3 all have Flash playing

capability and have very customizable UIs. There has been some amazing improvements already for the S9 that are far better than the factory UI. Every complaint I mentioned in my review has been resolved by end users. Cowon has also been pretty quick with updates. Watch for the new Sony touchscreen. It will have wifi and native noise cancelling that will work with any headphones. The device you want is coming, but it may take one or two more generations.

I have been downloading some of the custom UI's and its great but still its not smooth as say the Google G1 or Ipod touch. Really wished it had multi touch though... Not knocking Sony... but the problem with big names are they charge a arm and a leg for devices that cost them a lot less... thats why like a lot of us here, we look for best bang for the buck devices! You know, its about time someone come out with a true all in one device!

There is always some compromise when a device tries to be everything to everyone. I have an Instinct phone, and it does TV, web Radio, Bluetooth, Sprint's internet/data, music, movies, photos, email, apps, etc.. It could probably be my only device, but it for some reason can't deal with my work email. It takes an unbearable amount of time to load the music app, it's browser pales to safari on the iPhone, and so on.

I love most of the touchscreen players out there, but until they figure out how to eliminate finger prints they will always be one nagging problem after the apps and UI are perfect.

Tought I'd bump this thread, as the S9 just keeps getting better. The firmware is up to 1.20KoreanW/dictionary (2.20 any day) and 3.20 DMB and now includes widgets and a notepad (drawing) app. They've release a 32gb model in Korea, with the rest of the world expected to get it by the end of this month. Custom UI development continues at a feverish and frankly amazing pace.

I reviewed it on my blog awhile back, and every complaint I had about it has been resolved with user created replacements for the stock apps. Shaping up to be one of the best PMPs available this year.
