"Crawling" for Bass

When using the "crawl" method for finding the right spot for your sub, what should you put in your AVR for distance setting? Should it be zero ?

Thanks

Don't ask me I thought you where the guy on sub bass authority around here?

So let me get this straight, does this mean getting down on you're hands and knees crawling around the floor listening for low end in the lower parts of frequency spectrum?

I don't really bother with the settings on the AVR Kenwood KRF-X9050D THX select, most of the bass at the front matching JBL LCR is done via the delay settings on the DCX2496. I also plan to install at a very later date a second and third DCX2496 to tailor the delay settings of the surrounds with crossover filters and sub bass extension and LFE.1, so there's no messing around.

Well those links had no examples on how to crawl around for sub bass, so I took it upon myself to undertake this grave and channelling task, the results had my tongue hanging out.

#5 Crawl around the listening room and listen for when the sub seems to sound the best. (IE. Listen for depth, loudness, tightness and definition)

Here's how:

Move your subwoofer as close as you can to where you sit. If it's a chair, move the chair aside and place the sub where the chair was. If it's a couch, slide the couch temporarily out of the way and put the sub about where you usually sit.

Play a DVD with lots of low-frequency effects or a CD with plenty of deep bass, the kind that really kicks your sub into motion.

Now the action. Get out the kneepads and crawl about the room in the general area where you were thinking of locating the sub. Go several yards in each direction--near the wall, out from the wall, towards a corner, away from the corner, and so on--while you listen for smooth and extended bass response.

At some locations, the bass may seem really exaggerated and boomy. In other spots, it may almost disappear. Pick a location somewhere between these extremes. That's it! Mark the spot (no, not like a dog or a wolf would!), then move the subwoofer into that position. Now put the furniture back.

Yah I guess there was no examples on how to crawl around for sub bass.

You got it that’s because no has the balls to do it, all talk no action!

I’ve noted when standing upright, then doing (the crouching tiger itching dragon) technique the tone changes when playing it independently from one loudspeaker to the next. But I don’t think you what to see the (itching dragon).

I don't use the crawl method because it is easier to place the sub where I sit and move the mic, taking multiple measurements and recording locations. It's probably not that important to put in a distance until final fine tuning with the mains as it can be used to flatten the dips around the xover region, but, it doesn't hurt if you're a stickler for detail.

Also if you use a BFD you have to add in 1ms of delay compensation for its processing.
I always thought it was easy to place it where you sit and just walk around the room.

I have Behringer ECM8000 and MIC100 and a basic RTA so I have no worries, I might as well place the mic on boom, and hold it so that the mic is at around the same height level as the sub and walk gently around, while looking at the RTA readings.

Oh yeah, I have a FBQ2496 but I thought it was pants for the sub bass EQ so now its used for the stereo surrounds it was pain in the neck to use that for the two sub bass speakers, I’d sooner spend another £170.00 for DCX2496 to do the sub bass arrays rather then beating around the bush, and place DEQ2496 in-line with the DCX2496 to do the EQ.
