No, you're not crazy, the Panasonic VT50 has excellent picture quality, assuming its in good condition, I would go for it for sure.

I recently picked up a 50" Panasonic ST60 to replace an 8 year old 42" Panasonic 720p plasma. I'm amazed at the picture! My wife has complained that I'm "encroaching" on her space as this tv is in the area where she watches her ""shows" (chick flicks and such.) I have begun to abandon my Samsung PN58c550 in the basement because I prefer the image on the ST60. I just found an available Panasonic 55VT50 for $1000 in what appears to be great condition. I'm considering replacing the Samsung with the Panasonic. The Samsung still looks good and I may be temporarily infatuated with the new picture on the Panasonic. Am I crazy for considering sacrificing the 3" of screen size for what is a considerable jump in image quality? I'm interested in all of your thoughts on this.
