On the Digital Bits site, there's a short article which links a teaser photo on Criterion's Facebook page to a film canister of the original "Gojira" film. Apparently Criterion is in the process of prepping the original film in both it's Japanese and English language versions for home video release, probably to coincide with the 2012 theatrical release of the latest US remake. In addition, a fine grain 35mm print of the English language (Raymond Burr version) print has surfaced which likely means a dramatically better version of at least the US version will see home video release that would trump any previous release in both completeness and quality. Awesome! This news rivals the discovery of the Dead Sea scrolls.



I have fond memories of first seeing this as a kid in the late 50's shown on a local late night TV channel that featured sci-fi films after regular network programming ended. My first introduction to the man in the rubber suit and the original Godzilla has remained a sentimental favorite ever since.
