Criterion's October blu-rays...

Howards End

Monsoon Wedding

Wings Of Desire

And let's not forget to mention that Criterion has also decided to raise the SRP price by $10, which means the SRP for blu-rays is now $49.95. Great, huh?

I guess that's only five bucks more than Disney is asking for Race to Witch Mountain. But I will be less likely to blind/impulse buy a Criterion title at that price.

This is a new century- hell, a new millennium. Black is white, up is down, and companies raising prices are another sign that the format is expecting positive, robust growth.

It would be terrible if they were dropping prices because then that would mean it was fire-sale pricing and we all know from back in the dark days of the format wars what a terrible thing that was.

No, this is a great sign- so many people want the product that the companies can charge almost whatever they want.

What?
That is the most ridiculous spin I've ever read!

I've been buying Criterion Blu-rays only when the price goes down below $20, but hovering around $50 is way out of line.

What happened to Criterion pricing their Blu-ray Disc releases the same as their DVDs? I've been buying the majority of their BD releases so far but if you're adding another $10 to the price of each I'll likely stop buying them altogether.

I suspect the companies don't quite know what to do with Blu-ray pricing, or DVD pricing, for that matter. People are no longer collecting DVDs hand over fist, and collectors, disgusted with the hi-def price points, are sitting it out for a while on that format and many dropping DVDs entirely.

The Golden Age of availability of most of yesteryear's video content may be coming to an end.

Yay! I've really been enjoying picking up Criterion discs as they've been released on Blu. I just ordered For all Mankind, The Seventh Seal and Repulsion last night.

The only time I bought any of the Criterion movies at all was in the past week when they were all $18 for me at Barnes and Noble. For All Mankind, The Third Man, Man Who Fell to Earth, Last Emperor and Bottle Rocket (basically all the ones in English

No chance I pay even $35 for any movie.

It's nice to know that, for once, we're getting a better deal in the UK.

Many Criterion films are appearing on different labels in the UK. With The Red Shoes we appear to have got there first. This film is going at HMV for £14 ($22.40) - a Criterion release at $45 would probably sell for $40 or so (£25).

Last Year In Marienbad on US Criterion Blu-ray Disc is $35 (around £20), but the upcoming UK release is only £17 ($27).

Does anyone have a URL link for this statement??
