Well, I bit , and got a couple of these Crown XLS 402's I haven't completed the hook up yet, because I stopped to post this as soon as I turned them on....the fan noise is going to be a major issue for me! Not happy.

Any electrical engineers here want to share the means (and also the wisdom!) of disconnecting or replacing these fans? I know enough not to play around inside an amplifier, but that's about the extent of what I know! If something could be done to the fans, and they subsequently ran too hot, I assume the thermal protection would kick in, right?

Off to finish the hookup. On the plus side, I expect everything will at least now be loud enough to (maybe) drown out the fans!

Some help would really be appreciated, or if not.... likely a buyer for 2 brand new amps!

Thanks.

Just do a search you will find a thread here how to modify them, or try to install them remote if you can or affraid to do the mod.

Just replaced the fans yesterday!

I used these fans: Silenx 80mm 9dba (quiet)

They do not move the air that the stock fans do, but are very quiet. In the home environment they are perfectly fine.

If you dig thru the super long pro amp thread, you will see these mentioned there. (Where I got the idea from)

I bought the fans at my local Microcenter. Do a web search, and you can find them on several sites. (ie. Newegg.com)

You can also use an in-line resistor to slow the stock fans down as well. (threads on it here too)

The fans are very accessible and all that is needed is to cut the red and black wires and splice them. Most PC case fans have a third wire (yellow) that will not be used.

Mod took about half an hour start to finish. Just my ears, but about 1/10th as loud as before.

I have a question..

After cutting the wires and changing the fans, didn't that void the warranty.....

I don't have a direct link, but it's in the "amp making me grin from ear to ear" thread.
