A friend of mine has a monochrome projector in his collection. It has a 12" Schmidt design (like the Kloss Novabeam projectors). But it goes back further than that - the very first television systems were rear-projectors. The Baird "Televisor" system in Britian in the 1920s used a rotating disc and a modulated light source. Zworkin showed a large-screen projection system in a theater in the 1930s. Both of these were well before the invention of the CRT.
