Baba Yaga – Another Eng-399 Build - PSI Audio custom 18s

Viggo Tarasov said:
That "****in' nobody"... is John Wick. He once was an associate of ours. They call him "Baba Yaga".

My current substage consists of a pair of custom built for HT PSI Audio 12” Platform 2 drivers in DIYSG 4 cube enclosures tuned to 19.5 Hz. These have provided me effortless response to 15hz and more than enough capability to skip a heartbeat. However, upgraditis is a very real condition, and over the course of a few years I’ve come to realize that the 18” driver is considerably more suitable for my… “needs”.

Pair that with PSI Audio’s excellent communication, customer service, and Black Friday deals, and a few weeks later and Mr. FedEx is struggling to move these monsters into my front room.

Mike (@eng-399;) is a good friend and quite local to me. As we all know he has the knowledge, skills, tools, and experience to bring the wholesome goodness of gratuitous LFE to home theaters. As such, he is tasked with the design and build for my new subs. I’ll be handing off the technicals of the build to him.

To say I’m excited about this build and the upcoming results of this build would be an understatement.

I’m actually a little scared… Which is why I'm calling this build "Baba Yaga"!

Hmm, wonder what name Eng will go with this time? Very nice looking drivers. Should bring a Mouth for War. Ported I assume?

Last night was fun getting to hear your room again and measuring these New monster PSI subs you bought. I’m glad we where able to figure out the Datsv2 and get a measurement from it with a little help from Matt Poes. I’m excited to build these for you the 18’s will be fun to here since your coming from 12’s. I’m going to draw up plans sometime today for it.

Love that album! I like your thinking to where going to have to figure out a name for these...
Hmmm what should these boxes be called.
Here’s some more pictures of the subs there beastly in person!
Jc I just got back home and going to start a cut list for them.

Baltic birch for this build 60-60” sheets!

It's definitely my favorite Pantera album. I'll be buying some 60x60 sheets soon also. Are you going to be using 3/4" BB? That's a hefty price. Wouldn't 1/2" be enough? Can't wait to watch these come together.

JC's Custom--------18''- PSI Leval 3 Home Theater sub

Box size--

50 iches wide 28 inches height 16.75 inches depth

external cubic ft. 13.57 cubes

internal after bracing, driver, slot port 9.5 cubic ft.

15hz. tune with a 1st port resonance 150.84hz.

Air Port Velcity at ''max'' is 20.601 ms at 14.79 hz

The port length via WINISD 0.7.0.900 calls for a vent length of 44.85 but where going to extend it and have it three inches short to the back wall to bring down the port tune a tad. The Dayton Audio DATSV2test device will measure the exact tune once the box is complete.

Cutlist-for 2 boxes

(4)-Front /baffle---50''/28''

(2)-Back-50''/28''

(2)-Side 1 non port side-26.5/14.5''

(2)-Side 2 port side14.5''/23”

(2)-TOP 14.5''/50”

(2)-Bottom-14.5''/50”

(2)-Port panel-14.5''/46''

(2)-port rail - 2.75”/49.25”

(8)-window bracing- 23”/14.5”

Between all the learning on REW last night tweaking my 12s (which now sound dramatically better and have actual midbass I was missing before) to WINISD with Mike explaining... I'm gonna sit back and watch Mike with this build and enjoy the ride.

Not a bad idea at all.

Is this normal for 0.7.0.900? I'm using the same version, modeled a B&C 21" and it showed the same vent length?

Hmmm going to jump on now and see what’s up. Thanks for posting that!!

Were you modeling the same net box size and tune? If so the driver is irrelevant the vent volume determines the BOX tune.
In small vented boxes, it is possible that a change to a different driver with a radically larger or smaller motor volume can change the effective tune.

That would show up in an impedance sweep in a case where it occurred but I don't think it will show in WinISD. I have never seen it and if you have an example that shows different in WinISD I would like to see it, I have never been able to find a situation that changed the vent volume with just a change of driver in the program.

You are correct, it will not be seen in a simulation, only in a measurement of an actual box.

Yikes!!!! 384.30$ for 6 sheets of Baltic Birch plus tax....
here's the cuts for this guys I just down loaded this cut list program right now off the web. The port rail is missing because the free program won't go over 5 cuts I guess you have to pay for it to have more options oh well... close enough for me
