D* and O&O question

861 Views 22 Replies 10 Participants Last post by  bonscott87
Just got hooked up with HDTV service from D* yesterday and since I live in the D/FW market, I thought I was suppose to get the NBC, CBS and Fox (today) East and West coast feeds.

I asked the phone rep about activating those feeds and he told me that he still had to request a waiver from the station.

Is this right?

Are you in an O&O for those channels?
Yes, Dallas is an O&O for all of those. I pointed this out to the D* rep but he still insisted that he had to apply for a waiver.
Depends where you are. Even if in an O&O area, if you are in Grade B of another market then you need a waiver from that market. Example is many areas of Detroit. Despite being an O&O, most of the Detroit area is in the Toledo grade B area and thus need Toledo waivers.
I would call back and talk to another rep and tell them the same thing. If they still are having trouble with it ask to speak to a supervisor. The reps on the phone will usually know less than you do.
You should definitely be getting the HD feeds for these channels. CBS and NBC are on, FOX should be on sometime today. Supposed to be on this morning but I guess they ran into a snag.

No waivers are necessary.

ABC will be the last major network to get up on D* in HD and the Dallas affiliate is not O&O. Hopefully we can get it anyway.
Use the Distant Network Eligilbility page to see what stations that they think you receive.

ah, perhaps that does show what's going on.

They show me with two CBS stations both in the strong A category. There's a CBS station about 30 miles north of us. So they're getting a waiver from that station in Sherman?

However, they didn't show anything else for any other network. Do you think I'd be able to request that I get NBC and Fox (if and when) while waiting for the waiver from the CBS station?
Oh. Didn't think Sherman was that close to be a factor for you northern metro folks.
I didn't even consider Sherman either since I've never once tuned into their signal.

Wonder what the odds are that they will approve the waiver.
I applied for a waiver for FOX hoping for the HD channel about 6 weeks ago. I have one grade A signal (O&O) and one grade B signal. I called them today to ask about the status. They told me they sent waiver requests to both stations. The grade B signal was approved, but the grade A signal (the O&O station) denied my waiver, so they won't give me FOX DNS.

The CSR told me that they require waivers from all stations. O&O included. I'm not sure where to go from here.

When you requested waivers for FOX, you requested waivers for the SD versions to which the O&O denied you access to. However, they (at least to my knowledge) cannot deny you access to FOX HD via DirecTV... only the "Grade B" signal station could do that...

Mr. Fowler I have a question for you. Why aren't you Lee Corso and Kirk Herbstreet going to Tallahassee this weekend for the FSU v. Virginia football? That game is going to be huge and it has national title and ACC ramifications. I think you and the rest of the crew do a good job on College Gameday. I saw one of your Gameday shows in January 2002 in Miami when FSU played Ok. for the national title. Good production value. Mr. Fowler your participation is this forum is great. Maybe you can provide your insight into the upcoming games this weekend. Also, how do you like hdtv? Have you had a chance to see any of the ESPN hd college football games in hd? ;) Sorry for all of the questions Chris. You don't mind me calling you Chris do ya? Chris could you PM me and let me know if you can get me tickets to the National Title game?

Thanks Chris, :D

I emailed a writer on the ESPN website asking a question and he mistook me for the famous Chris Fowler. That was fun. :D

updating - so I called D* back and again asked for NBC and CBS's East and West Coast feed. Once again the CSR told me that I would need a waiver. She was very polite about it, but I told her that I am on their website right now and I read her the statement about getting those feeds from my geographical location.

She told me to wait a few minutes, put me on hold and then came back saying I was completely right. She added CBS-HD and NBC-HD feeds to my account. However, when I tried to get her to do the same with Fox, she said it wasn't showing up as possible in her system so she couldn't do it.

I'm just going to monitor the Fox thread and call back if it comes online for tonight's game.

That's the page about CBS HD. Still no FOx HD showing up on my programming profile at D*.com but I do pickup channel 4 decently so I'm won't be in that big a rush to get it straightened out assuming Fox-HD does go live on D* tonight.
She can't add Fox HD because it's not on DirecTV yet. You won't get anywhere with that until it's actually on DirecTV.
