D* HDTV question

631 Views 5 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  crashairlines
I recently had a 3 LNB DirecTV system installed and I had a few questions. The reason that I had the 3 LNB dish installed instead of the 5 LNB is because I live in an apartment and the LOS to the satellites for the larger dish wasn't available due to the positioning of my home. However, the tech informed me that I could purchase an HD Receiver, have the HD programming activated through DirecTV and it would work with the smaller dish. Is this possible? What would be the downside to doing this? Thanks!

With what I have read the 5LNB dish is for the expanded HD channels broadcast in MPEG4. Currently your 3LNB with the HD receiver will demod the current HD feeds available in MPEG2.

I think this is correct...

You will be able to watch all D* programming except for HD locals with the 3LNB dish and HD receiver. It is likely that the current HD channels and PPV will be in MPEG2 for quite a while.
I wonder about the tech's ability. The 3LNB dish gets 101, 110, and 119. The 5 LNB accesses 99 and 103 also. A 2 degree difference is awfully close to call. With most or all HD going to MPEG4 Ka band sometime in the future, you might want to check out the claim further.

Probably not much longer than 12 more months. The conversion push has begun with D* removing the HD DNS to many subs as many have posted.

D10 is scheduled to launch 1st Q 07, should be operational by May of 07, expect HD nationals to switch to MPEG4 at that time - that's what this bird is specifically being put up for.

As soon as they begin to add HD nationals on D10 - my guess is EVERYONE will be quickly looking to switch over. I mean, why would you want to stay on MPEG2 if all the new HD nationals that we are all anxiously awaiting are ALL in M4?

And - why would anyone with HD want to install a dish knowing that they will have to go through this whole process again in a year or so? Get it done and over with now.

I'm waiting to convert to MPEG-4 until the rumored smaller dish comes out next year. Not sure if that would affect your situation or not.
