Anyone have any luck preventing this problem. My Hughes HTL-HD Directv receiver has the updated 2.01 firmware and keeps adding channels to my favorite list after I delete (hide) them. The channels so far are NFLHD, PPV170 and PPV180, NBA channel(s), and 3 of the shopping channels in the 200's. I have hidden them in the menu several times and they keep coming back! I spoke with D* tech support level 1, then level 2, then hd support, then the supervisor, then the supervisor's supervisor, and they are currently telling me when it happens again that they will replace my access card. I have no hopes this will correct the problem as it seems to be some kind of advertising on their part. I have another HD receiver that does not do this. Anyone out there with further insight?

Any time DirecTV removes or adds a channel it will show back up again in the custom guide. It makes sense that they want you to know a new channel has come on (especially since they do such a bad job announcing them). The problem is when they are continually moving channels around / adding and deleting them. Then you just keep getting old channels popping back up.

FYI - favorites saved in the Surf guide do not add in this manner (as in the custom guide).

Thx for your input guys, yes, I've read the monster thread again and R11 indicates that this is an issue which will only be corrected with a firmware update, and I agree. He talks about favorites and I assume he is talking about the surf list. And just to clarify I am addressing the channel list not the channel guide although the problem is with both. And to reiterate, the custom channel lists in my other receiver do not have this difficulty so I don't see how anyone could describe this as 'normal'. (Chris, I can see how they might be shuffling ppv's but the shopping channels are consistent in their channel assignment afaik) In my conversation with the D* higherups they said they had not heard of the problem and that they would report it to the engineering department, so maybe if some more of us complain it will be fixed.

They do this on purpose to get you to buy the PPV or whatever they want to sell you. I constantly delete the NFL, NBA, PPV etc. and they are alot of the times the same channels not some new channel that was just added so they want you to keep seeing these particular channels in the hope that you might just buy that PPV product. Its all marketing.

So I guess my HTL, being newer than my DST3000, supports these advanced marketing techniques and the Toshiba does not. So let's join together here and complain, if this bothers others as it does me. (I do acknowledge that this is not a huge issue though) Notice, however, that I had to go up five levels to speak to someone of any competence. TIA for your phone calls, fellow channel creep nonenthusiasts.

Ok, You guys convinced me. I will never switch from Dish Network to DirecTV. I consider this unacceptable behavior. One of my reasons for not wanting a PVR was the story in England where the PVR, without the owners knowledge, downloaded a show and then in a banner page let the owner know that this show was "available".

It's not a dealbreaker, just an annoyance. The only problem is that 2 or 3 channels keep popping up and once a week I go in and delete them. No really BIG DEAL but I just feel they don't have a right to add something after I have specified that I don't want to see it. But that's the way of the marketing world and if you have ever worked with any of the Fortune 500 companies and their marketing departments then this is no big deal just the ways of the world. I have worked for over 30 of the Fortune 500 companies as a consultant and I have seen all of these games and more played by these guys as they will do anything to retain or enhance their jobs and stature in the company. THE BOTTOM LINE RULES.

So you'd give up the advantages of a PVR because it might record something you don't want it to?

I feel your pain...

For me it is more than an annoyance especially with the OTA channels. It puts 3 or more channels out there for every local channel (1 D*, 1 analog, 1 DTV plus any additional sub channels). Because I have a UHF (no VHF) antenna, the analog OTA VHF stations are snow. For example if I hit ‘9’ on the remote it tunes to the D* remapped local channel 9 off of the satellite; then hit channel UP and I get VHF 9 (not viewable snow), hit channel UP and I get 9-1 (DTV channel 9 sub channel 1), hit channel UP and I get 9-2 , hit channel UP and get 9-3. Each time this happens I remove all but the 9-1 channel.

So D* stops adding channels to your list. Then when they do add new channels, and you don't know it because they weren't added to your receiver, you'll call and complain that D* is telling you when it's adding new channels, and that should be illegal.

I think the frustration is not with D* adding the channels when they are truly added, but there are certain channels that just keep popping up every day when I have removed them from my HTL-HD (the subject of this thread, not DVRs.)

I can understand that if the receiver does a reset, I have to go back and reset my custom list. I can handle that. I too have to go and remove the 'duplicate' OTA stations after a reset. Fortunately, this only happens about once every 60-90 days. (If it's happening more often, check into getting a UPS on your receiver, stops most resets, which are due to voltage fluctuations, not sent by D*.)

But without a reset, there are several shopping channels and one PPV channel that re-appears every day. At the risk of being labeled a homophobe, I do not want to see the listings for 170-Here. I have removed it from my custom list at least daily and it keeps re-appearing. No other PPV channels exhibit this tendency. What is the point of removing it when D* resets it daily.

It is a channel I have no interest in (but I am not advocating D* remove it, c'est la Vie) and I am tired of having re-appear daily. D* is 'promoting' this a little too heavily.
That being said, it is hardly a reason to stay on Dish. The Tivo functionality is worth the move alone. I have been on D* for 7 years and have converted at least 5 former Dish owners, just because of Tivo v. Dish's DVR.

A minor frustration to be sure, but I have to have something to gripe about. :)

D* is moving channels around a lot to make best use of its satellites and transponders. They are also preparing for the use of a new satellite position and have special needs to handle Sunday ticket football one day a week. SD PPV channels are all being moved above 126. When a channel gets put on a different transponder/satellite, it looks like a new channel to the box.

greywolf always good to hear from you in this great forum but in this case that is not what is happening because I have checked the transponders for that very thing. It just seems that they want to entice you to buy NFL PPV or some other PPV as the cbearnm meantioned and it happens often.

greywolf, I wrote down all of the satellite info and transpoders for each of these channels and I am going to look at that info when I get these channels back. I have listed the channels below:

Channel 93, 94, 97, 98, 99, 228.

If they reappear and are on the same satellite and transponder, then I will know for sure that they are being put back for marketing purposes.

It's not that simple. The transponders may be used for another channel for a short time. Sunday ticket is a big culprit in such use. If the offending channels are taken off or moved, even for a short time, then later moved back to exactly the same places as before, they will act like new channels. You would need to track activity on a test channel practically on an hour by hour basis.
